Of course it's not confirmed that the announcement will be re iPhone, but I'm expecting it will be too. 16GB and/or 3G will make me seriously consider it, otherwise it's N73+iPod Touch for me.

i think this comes very quickly after the announcement of the price drops in america which they said were for the holiday season. which makes me think we're going to get an EDGE phone (i also hear O2 have been adding EDGE recently). the american customers got so cheesed off about the quick price drop and they won't be happy if we get 3G before them. and apple knows this. so my guess is EDGE. which is rubbish.

Without an unlimited data plan the whole EDGE vs 3G debate is a moot one. I'll be getting an iPhone regardless of whether its 3G or not.

I've been saying that I'll only get it if it has 3G, seems pointless otherwise as I don't have any wi-fi hotspots near me.
What is EDGE anyway? |

What is EDGE anyway? And there's no way Apple wouldn't insist on an unlimited data plan. No way. |

While this may be enough for some people, it is a big drop from the 1.8Mb, 2.8Mb, 3.6Mb & 7.2Mb speeds being offered on 'real' 3G. Not that that'll bother some people. It would me, mind. No 3G, no point (IMHO). |

Hmm, I don't think it would bother me as such as long as it's quickish I'm not that fussed.
Is EDGE supported by all networks then, or will it just be O2? I don't fancy having to cancel my Vodafone contract just for the iphone. |

But its probably going to be O2 anyway (and it will likely be an exclusive deal similar to what AT&T have). So be prepared to change networks if you want an iPhone (why is this a big deal anyway? I've been on most networks and they are all mcuh of a muchness as far as I'm concerned).

Support for EDGE on Orange is targetted for non-3g areas, and is far from complete.

I have an iPhone running on Orange Edge and I am very happy with it. OK it's nothing like as fast as WiFi but when out and about it's heaps better than nothing. I was on a train yesterday and urgently need a map of Birmingham, was able to access it via Edge and Google maps, no real performance problem. Bottom line is I would much rather have the awesome iPhone user interface on a slow network than any other phone I have seen on a faster network.

someone was saying above that the orange EDGE coverage isn't enormously extensive. how do you find it?
E is fairly rare, but does appear from time to time. Its not much better than GPRS though I find. Btw, why does everyone want an iPhone? I'm not an apple basher... but it just looks annoying and hard to use. You'll look cool for 5 mins, then it'll either get nicked, or will look dated very quickly. Really missing something here guys... |

for me the reason i like iphone is the multitouch gestures and the way they work with internet browsing and coverflow. i also think it looks nice. plus i use macs so using it will be second nature to me.

I do like some parts of the iPhone don't get me wrong... theres just a few key things that make it a none-starter. |

i understand that... but texting with me awful without the tactile feel of proper keys.

I dont know how you people can afford all this EDGE or 3G.. my last bill was £70 (line rental only £35) and it was all on internet usage apparently. I had downloaded 8MB, 8MB!!! and got charged like over £30 for this and all i was doing was checking my emails and i think i downloaded the Transformers game demo and 2 wallpapers from it.
I soon deleted the connection settings out of my phone!! |

The lack of 3G is possibly one of the worst decisions apple has ever made. |

What a load of crap. Thats like saying we may as well stay with dialup since its all unlimited anyway.
The lack of 3G is possibly one of the worst decisions apple has ever made. Would make more of a difference here but it depends on your usage. I think unlimited data will be more important. I have 3G and it makes little difference to me. |

You are seriously saying you can't tell a discernible difference between EDGE/GPRS and 3G? I can only go on what I know here - I live in a bad area, and 3G is here some days and not others, but there is an absolutely massive difference in speeds between the two. |
