Guess so! I'm off into town to see if I can buy one at lunch, I will let you know how I get on! Must say it seems much calmer than when it came out in the states.

iphoneUKlaunch. com stating in press event that is 2 year contract but my source at o2 says is only 18 month contract....she also confirms you can preregister online at o2.com or carphonewarehouse.com as soon as full press briefing is completed.

oh, I am soooooo excited, i'm shaking a little!

It's 18 month according to the live feed on engadget.

Also free wi-fi via cloud - search for a hotspot at http://www.thecloud.net

I rather like the iPhone but probably will not be getting one as there are a few things that it doen't do that I use, i.e.

- MMS (picture messaging)
- video capture
- adding ringtones without having to pay for them (e.g. a sound file etc.)

I really like the multi-touch tech and am actually a big Apple fan (typing from my MacBook atm) but I think I shall wait and get the rev 2.

I'm not really bothered about EDGE/3G as I think that the wi-fi would be enough for me as I work in central London. But still, a rev 2 would probably be fine for me

now, now.

There are very few things that can still get me exictable, and a well anticipated and well delivered Apple launch is one of them.

Not much value for money. You need to pay a minimum of £35 AS WELL AS £270 for the phone, for an outdated phone that's not even 3G.

LG U990 is going to trash this, I think.

As someone that sells phones for a living I can tell you that LG phones are awful.

Good lord, I have just noticed the iPhone tariffs.
£35 p/m gets you 200 mins and £200 text. On Orange the same £35 p/m would get you 500 mins and unlimited texts.

WHAT A RIP-OFF!

But you get unlimited EDGE data (whatever % of the country that actually covers) ... and the opportunity to buy a wonderful state of the art phone.

£35/month for only 30% EDGE coverage and even then it isn't unlimited (FUP my arse).

Damn O2. I'll wait to see what happens to the unlock solution when the next update hits - or wait for the rev 2 with 3G.

The iPhone might not be cutting edge hardware-wise but its light years ahead of the competition software/UI wise.

That said, whilst I have no major problem with the price of the iphone (£269 seems reasonable to me for a high end new phone, unsubsidized) or the lack of 3G the need for an 18 month contract and the poor value for money with the O2 plans (unlimited data aside) has got me thinking twice.

Why on earth should you need to sign an 18 month contract when you are buying the phone outright? What happens if somebody buys the phone then fails O2's credit check and can't get a contract? Do they get offered PAYG? What about UK laws regarding your right to unlock a phone? Too many unanswered questions.

I can't even get into the o2 online store due to "exceptionallly high demand". I've never seen it like this....can you pre-order the phone or something?

I don't think its cutting edge software wise either. The only thing that sets it apart from anything else is the touchscreen/multitouch .... it is lacking in many software functions.

The voicemail system is clever. If it works the same as the AT&T versions do.

The general public don't care about features - they go for brand, design and simplicity.
The iPod's competitors have generally always had more features - FM radio, more supported codecs, more storage, lower price. But just look:

I'm really torn about the iPhone. I'd really like one, but the 18 month contract is putting me off, especially as the phone is unsubsidised. I guess that's o2's compromise for giving Apple such a huge share of the monthly revenue. Hopefully if they do launch a new iPhone next year, there will be an upgrade path for people still stuck in the initial contract term.

since the phone isn't subsidised, i don't see why you can't buy the second version of iphone and use it with the same airtime contract. of course, i'm guessing

Well my Nokia 6680 on Vodafone is getting a bit past it now. But given my previous experience with o2 I won't touch them with a barge pole. Why are apple insisting on having the phone exclusive to one network? Think I'll just push vodafone to give me an N95 upgrade.

i'd say for the revenue sharing. and as a minor point, getting visual voicemail to work.

Well if reports are to be believed, Apple achieved a 40% revenue share with o2 by playing the networks off against each other.
