My Topfield always verifies files when I switch it on. It has just started happening over the past week or 2.

I switch it on, the message comes up. It's really annoying because it stays there for a long time sometimes.

I have no TAPs apart from MyStuff. I've just installed the latest version to be sure I'm up to date.

Also, programmes do not record when the unit is on standby. So I have to leave it on all the time. So much for my carbon footprint! I wonder how many others in the silent majority are also burning fossil fuels needlessly.

It is obviously freaking out when I put it on standby. What's going on?

You might get a better response in the toppy.org.uk forums, as this could be down to a number of things.

The "verifying folders" business indicates that the Toppy is not shutting down cleanly (some process is still active, possibly accessing the disk, when it shuts).

For starters, if this started about a week ago, did it coincide with any changes that you made to anything (firmware, TAPs etc). Have you successfully negotiated the various channel changes recently (Ch4 +1, ITV3 etc)?

What firmware are you running, and have you applied any firmware patches at all? There seems to be one bug that sometimes affects waking up from standby - there is a firmware patch for it: http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8529
If you need any advice on the patching process, I am more than happy to advise (it is very simple indeed).

Have you tried running with no TAPs (Switch on the Toppy from standby but hold down the '0' key on the remote until the Toppy produces a picture)? If you still get the problem then perhaps try a factory reset?

When you put it into standby, does the OFF message come up for more than a second or so on the display?

I'm running the latest firmware (the last one I installed was to cope with the teletext problem). The Off message doesn't come up. I have re-scanned for the new channels, although the logos are missing on my MyStuff EPG.

There are new logo files for MyStuff.

Do you still have a problem if you do not have MyStuff running?

Have you any files or folders with non-alphanumeric characters on them which may be causing MyStuff to throw a wobbler?

Are you running 5.13.59, and do you have the Timer patch applied? That patch addresses a problem which sometimes occurs when the Toppy does not come out of standby.


You should see OFF displayed for maybe half a second or so before the display returns to the clock. If you are not seeing OFF then it suggests that the Toppy is just closing down even if some process is still active accessing the disc.

You could try running TAPless to see if problem persists

You've got the classic 'front panel gone a bit bonkers' problem. The LCD is probably showing the time permanently too. Power off at the wall for a few seconds and you'll be sorted.

My display never shows 'OFF' when I go into standby, but that's becuase I'm running the display TAP! I always remove power from my Toppy at least once a month and I haven't had the front pannel hanging problem since! I once came back from holiday to no recordings so since then I reset the box regularly!

Patching the firmware makes the machine a hell of a lot more stable. And if you're a member of the toppy.org.uk forums then you'll be able to download a new test firmware which apparently goes a bit further with regards to the mheg problems.
