I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get some for ages and have just got through to Dairycrest who tell me that Tesco and Sainsburys are not taking it anymore.

Morrisons have stock in some branches but then they are stopping taking it as well.

Apparently you can still get it in ASDA, the Co-op and Somerfield so Dairycrest tell me.

Anyone else managing to get hold of any?

Morrisons are stopping it too. ASDA is a bus ride away & Somerfield is a train ride away. Seems a long way to go for a butter substitute

I can't understand why shops are stopping it.

Dairycrest is one BIG company that produces many different brands, I can't understand why supermarkets would want to get their back up by not taking one of their top sellers.

I remember St Ivel Gold well, it's not that pleasant a taste in my opinion. Best spreads I've known that have been taken off the shelves are Delight Original and Anchor Half Fat spread.

It used to taste really good but it was reformulated a while ago and became a tasteless mess of chemicals. It used to be dairy rich and a lovely golden colour but turned into a pale imitation. Its no wonder people stopped buying it.

It's true. I stopped getting because of the fact.

I don't use butter or marg at all anymore.

aren't sandwiches/toast/baked potatoes, etc a bit dry?

I grew up on Blue Band...I dread to think what it had in it.
These days I like the olive oil spreads.

Not really, not if you plan what you put on the sandwiches right.

I got used to it without...

St Ivel Gold is my favourite spread, I have been using it for years and never used anything else until the last few weeks when it disappeared off my supermarket shelves. Have just been googling to find out what's happened to it - I thought the product must have been discontinued.

So why exactly have these supermarkets withdrawn it? And if supermarkets won't take it, what are the manufacturers going to do about it?

And finally, the choice of low fat spreads is bewildering. Can anyone recommend a product that is similar to St Ivel Gold if I have to change?

Thanks.

Nobody said people stopped buying it, they said the supermarkets stopped stocking it.

Don't bother with chemical mush - eat butter or lard.

Anchor Spreadable Light is what I've been buying. I can't really taste the difference between that and the normal Anchor Spreadable. Perhaps the only difference is about 10 calories a pot.

What's wrong with real butter in moderation?
I find nothing tastes as good in cooking, anyway.

Definitely. I used to LOVE Gold, it was gorgeous ... but the stuff of recent years is just horrid beyond belief. They've made it healthy, but removed the parts of it that made it a foodstuff.

Olive oil spreads are OK. I can understand someone not wanting to spread on transfat ( hydrogenated/hydrolised ) laden crap on their sandwich though.

Nothing. it's much healthier than many spreads made from man made chemicals

Isn`t it something to do with transfatty acids that are being withdrawn from products. Maybe St Ivel Gold had high levels and that was why it has gone ?

Possible. Anything with hydrogenated or hydrolised in the ingredient list should be avoided. Which usually means most of the brands that can only get sold in Aldi/Liddle becuase the mainstream supermarkets won't touch them.

I only have had the "lightest" variety and only first had it in the last six months so I never had it when it was "nice".

I was never not liking it I thought it tasted "distantly" of cheese spread but not anything I couldn't eat. I like the moist and cool feel of having something on the bread etc and didn't particularly get it for the taste, rather to reduce my fat intake.

The Omega Three one tasted more and more of fish as I used it more so I swapped to normal lightest but I felt that was fine. Can't be bothered to go all the way to ASDA to get it though. I've been using Morrisons Extra Light Cheese Spread, or whatever their Philadelphia alternative is called, instead of a butter (well, sunflower spread is all I've ever eaten I don't really like Butter-butter)

Suppose I'll be sticking with it now Gold is off the shelves... more protein anyway
