Doing anything to commemorate the occasion?

May be watching the programmes on BBC4 tonight, may catch a repeat if any.

There's a lot of stuff coming out: I heard a Sunday paper is giving away a compilation, and there's a telly-advertised comp out now.

Marc was an immensely talented man: like most pop stars he made some rubbish records, but the good far outweighs the bad: in an era of prog rockers and bubblegum glam, he managed to appeal to people on both sides of the rock spectrum, and he continues to do so to this day. It's just a shame he and the many incarnations of T. Rex never made it in America.

One of the true greats. I loved his mystical / olde world lyrics, and how he turned his early hippy phase into a heavier rock style that produced so many brilliant songs was a stroke of genius.

Those hit singles were outstanding as well; Get It On, Hot Love, Metal Guru, Telegram Sam and so many more.

His albums were underrated at the time I thought, The Slider and Tanx are both full of faultless pop - rock IMO.

An absolute original, never to be replaced.

another tragic young life taken FAR too early. I love his stuff, with Children of The Revolution and Metal Guru being my two favourites of his.

The BBC are doing a lot of programs about Marc and his music over the weekend.

Is there a special TOTP2 on? 'Cos that would be awesome and I'd get to watch it upstairs without disturbing Granddad's cricket and footie.

Thought I'd revive this thread as the big day is tomorrow.

It'll be sad reading about him in the sundays...

All my days are leafy blue
Because I'm not with you,
All my words are ragged steel
When I'm not with you.

See how the sun shines
Like an arc where you walk.

All my fears are water clear
When I'm not with you,
All I hear is wicked dear
When I'm not with you.

I danced myself out of the womb...

Is it strange to dance so soon?...

I danced myself into the tomb...

Took on a new light after the tragic events of '77, but still absolutely fantastic.

I went see Morrissey once and he did Cosmic Dancer; Marc was a big influence on the Smiths, the music in Panic is based partly on Metal Guru.

I have Panic on 45, and just for the slight Rex connection it's my fave Smiths track. "Hang the DJ"!

Let's talk about our favourite Marc songs: I'm currently a bit obsessed with the album Dandy in the Underworld- has great songs like "Visions of Domino" (gotta love that fiddle backing) and "Teen Riot Structure" (the first pop-punk song? Damn catchy too!)

It was Marc's last album too. Absolute shame .

I love the album Tanx; it has two gorgeous ballads - Broken Hearted Blues and Highway Knees. Those were just two from an album packed with riffs and great mystical lyrics.

The music press were turning on T. Rex at the time, as they did much later on Morrissey. I remember thinking to myself, why are they slating a bloke who can write such beautiful music as this?

I'll play all 4 of the Tyranosaurus Rex albums in a row I think. I bought them all in a sale about a year ago and haven't played them much.
Hot Love was on the car radio earlier this evening. I love that song.

My favourite T Rex songs are probably the early ones such as Beltane Walk, The King of the Mountain Cometh, Jewel, She Was Born to Be My Unicorn, Dove, By the Light of a Magical Moon - in fact, most of the songs on the Bolan Boogie album.

This is the first time I've disagreed with you, Mr. M. I don't like the honking sax on "BHB".

"Electric Slim and the Factory Hen", despite the daft title, is a brilliant orchestral ballad with Bill Legend providing a great marching-band style drum beat. Apparently, Bill was sacked when he began to go deaf and was replaced by Davey Lutton, who I don't think was as good, but he did have his moments.

Bolan Boogie is an excellent collection. No one's ever quite captured olde England the way Marc did. Unicorns and elves all came alive in his lyrics, I find those early songs really powerful.

I didn't know that about Bill Legend brokennews I'm not too keen on Zinc Alloy, though it has some great songs; the backing vocals are a bit intrusive on some of them I find.

I like Zinc Alloy, and I may be the only one in the world who's able to tolerate Gloria Jones .

Marc had a bad habit for sacking most of his band members: he once threatened to sack Steve Currie and Bill after they stopped playing after Marc slipped on some dry ice onstage. Davey was sacked in 1976, and poor Mickey Finn was sacked in 1975 in mid air en route to a recording session in LA.

I love Mickey, although he was like a proto-Bez in many ways- was paid to look cool, especially after 1972 (even though Bez is rather uncool now, Mickey is still very likeable ).

Poor Mickey He used to look the part in the line up

I saw a documentary on Marc saying how he'd turned on his old music biz mates once famous; don't know how true it is though.

Mr. M, I'd recommend "Bolan: The Rise and Fall of a 20th Century Superstar" by Mark Paytress, for your Marc biography needs. There's some interesting stuff in there: records being used as frisbees, stage props backfiring, and of course the Peel relationship. Peel was a huge fan of Marc, from his earliest records until "Get It On", which the DJ hated and played only once or twice.

There's lots more stuff in the book: Marc and Gloria's relationship, the decline of his popularity and his subsequent lapses into violence, coke and booze.
