They did it last year... I don't think DWTS is done on the weekends I think its done during the week so they would fly back and forwards between the two shows...

Now I love Len but even I admit that as the weeks goes on - with his heavy schedule he can get narky/moody - last year Len came across as a bit moody/annoyed

It's is even worse this year for them. Last year DWTS was on a Tuesday now they have moved it to a Monday. So they have an even smaller amount of time which they need to get to LA.

Would be more practical if the UK and US versions were done at different times of the year. That way it would avoid the judges flying back and forth.

Problem is the US has 2 series a year, so the last one was done in Spring was OK - if they stuck to one a year it would make far more sense.

When I met Len and Bruno at the press conference for the Eurovision Dance Contest, Len told me that the two of them fly out to LA together, but they take different journeys back.

This year, Bruno also has Dance Wars (the US version of Dance X) to deal with; preliminary auditions started the week after the EDC.

It takes a brave man to take on all that work at once...

Or a foolish and a greedy one. So that means Bruno will be involved in 3 different shows at once on both sides of the Atlantic? That's just ridiculous! I'm sure it's alot of money to turn down, but frankly, as America is supposed to be the home of Dance, you'd have thought they could find their own Judges. IMO it's diluting our show, as other posters have said, it took it's toll on Len & Bruno last year and made for a very unpleasant atmosphere and nastiness at times. Perhaps the time has come for the BBC to change the Judging Panel?

Last year's DWTS show and results were on a tuesday and wednesday, which meant Len and Bruno had to fly over on a thursday or friday to be in time for SCD. Now the DWTS is on a monday and tuesday, it gives them an extra day then last year to recover from their jetlag in time for SCD. So really the DWTS crew are going to get a moody Len and Bruno this year, as there is barely a day between SCD and DWTS being shown.
I'm not too sure whether this is the last year DWTS are having 2 series per year, I read a while back that in 2008 there is only going to be 1 series of DWTS. (and if it's true hopefully that 1 series will be shown in the spring and there would be no interruptions with SCD or It Takes Two next year!)

That is questionable. Parts of 'The Americas' perhaps (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba) but the USA?

Well, that's why I said "supposed" as I don't believe it is either, though in terms of Musical theatre, we're always being told, and have been for the past 25 years, that casts in America [the USA] can do everything, whereas our casts are limited. I don't agree with that though. But I'm sure people involved in the Dance world over there are asking why 2 Brits [one formerly Italian] need to be shipped in to appear in all their dance related TV shows?

Yeah I don't know why Bruno is sent over... I guess I can understand Len....

Actually forget that with the American crowd reactions on DWTS I can understand Bruno ... I think its to keep a link, you know Craig and Brendan does the Australian one...

DWTS is made my BBC in the US which is headed up by quite a few British people. I'd imagine its them they wanted to make sure the British format was kept as British as possible ie have two British judges. If was made by a US production company i don't think they would of asked any of the UK judges.

It is made by a US Production Company - ABC.

BBC worldwide have just distributed it to the UK. The BBC does not make any programmes at all in America. USTV is a closed shop, so it wouldn't be allowed. They've just bought up the format, that's all.

I beg to differ, but Dancing With The Stars is made by BBC Worldwide Productions USA for the ABC network.

The structure is similar to an indie producer making something for a commissioning channel over here -- say, Brighter Pictures/Endemol making Big Brother for Channel 4.

...oh, and after further research, it looks as if the open call auditions stage of Dance Wars will be over before Strictly starts in the UK, while the live shows won't start until Dancing With The Stars is over.

So while preparation for Dance Wars will be ongoing, I don't think it's going to be a substantial drain on Bruno's time, even if he's keeping an eye on the training of the dancers selected to go through to the live shows.

Oh, right, thanks for the info.

In that case I sincerely hope the BBC producers spot the difference in quality with the band and singers, the overall lightness of the character of DWTS compared to how SCD has become at times, from series 3 onwards. And the very real possibilty that some viewers are thoroughly fed-up with the beahviour of some of the Judges and would like a change. There's no doubt both SCD and ITT were affected by Bruno & Len's transatlantic escapades last year, and it looks like it'll be more of the same this year.

ETA: BTW the channel 7 website in Australia says that their show DWTS "is based on the ABC format from America" so I guess the BBC didn't get their credit in downunder.

I don't understand why DWTS is on twice a year?! I know it's a huge show in America, but so is SCD for us Brits and the BBC don't commission two series of Strictly a year do they?

If the DWTS show is made by BBC Worldwide, why can't the US have one season of their DWTS in the spring, and as a top up let them watch our SCD in the winter which should satisfy those dance fans in America and it would stop Bruno and Len's jetlag interfering with our SCD.
La Rhumba
15-09-2007
We did only once, the first year it started. SCD1 started in May 2004, then we had SCD2 in the Autumn/Winter of that year.

I agree with you, but the Americans never seem to broadcast our shows, they just make their own versions, even of dramas like Queer As Folk, they have to remake it with Americans. Why? When their shows are happily watched all over the world?

It's nice that their version of SDF is still going strong though - BBC take note!

So does that mean BBC Worldwide makes So You Think You Can Dance? in America, but cancelled it here after series 2?
