BBC News 24 Multiscreen Problems

Every time I switch to the BBC News 24 Multiscreen, I get 4 blank windows instead of video. I sometimes get video on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Obviously there is a major bug in the software.

Working OK here (Sandy Heath) with v5.13.59

I got the same as Ian, that is, works sometimes, not others. I am on an older firmware revision, though.

But as I hardly ever use the feature, it doesn't bother me...

No one else has ever reported that, on any of the firmwares - and News 24 multiscreens is one of the specific functions tested as part of the beta process.

So to say "Obviously there's a major bug in the software" seems rather like an exaggeration.

Perhaps if you said what firmware you have, it might help diagnose any potential issue.

Just for completeness, I'm still on 5.12.88.

That's a pretty long in the tooth version now; the most recent OTA was 5.13.40, and there's a public beta of 5.13.65 available now, which addresses a problem with ITV/C4 interactive services, as well as some other issues.

Someone has just reported in the Terrestrial sub-forum that they're getting this behaviour with a Sony box, so it looks like its not a Toppy bug. Phew, we won't need a patch for that then.

I'm a firm believer in 'if it aint broke...'. I'm still at least one version behind with MyStuff as well! Perfectly happy with the performance, thank you. Been running without a power cycle for over 6 months until last week (and I actually think my EPG population issues were down to SWMBO leaving the Toppy permanently on QVC!). If I spot anything that gives me any grief, that's when I'll upgrade (perhaps when FVPB gets to be a solid release or when MS-NG comes out).

Yes, you will get some EPG issues if you leave it on permanently; a power on/off from time to time does help tidy up memory usage.

If you don't use ITV/C4 text, then you won't have experienced the problem that some older versions have with that.

I still had EPG issues even after the power cycle - lots of 'no information' gaps. But when I subsequently switched it to BBC1 and left it to do an EPG grab by itself, eh voila, no more gaps...

The BBC mux is the most reliable for the broadcast of EPG information, certainly. Some of the others seem to take the view that keeping the data streams running reliably has little in the way of shareholder value.

I have the latest firmware (downloaded just 2 days ago).

Do you have all the BBC channels in the 300 range?

The interactive ones - yes.

This problem still persists with my Toppy. It's really annoying. I think Topfield should do something.

Ah, against my better judgement....

This is not a Topfield problem - its been reported about various other boxes on these forums. Get a grip, man.

Glen.

I believe that it's the responsibility of STB manufacturers to work with the broadcast service providers to resolve these problems.

What you believe and what passes for reality have considerably less than a passing resemblance.

I am a regular user of the BBC Multiscreens, and have used them with absolutely no problems at all on firmware versions 5.12.88, 5.13.59 and 5.13.65

So, no bugs there then (and 5.12.88 goes back to July 2006)

Tsk; time to bump up a negative thread about Topfield again, eh?

Like the other "bug" you tried to lay at Topfield's door, this one doesn't appear to be their fault, either.

We don't actually know where the fault lies, do we?

I can categorically state that there have been no categorical statements regarding the BBC Multiscreen problem in this thread.

Not every user has reported no problems.

No, but by any stretch of the imagination you seem to have more than your fair share of problems compared to anyone else out there ..... now I really do wonder why. Unlucky, or just single-minded in your particular hobby-horse/agenda/bee-in-bonnet? I'll let others decide as I really cannot be bothered.
