22" LG 22LS4R - Advice Please!

Seriously considering getting one of these, but I could use a little advice from anyone who owns one as to whether it's suited to my needs...

Feedback seems generally positive but with a couple of issues that raise concerns for me.

I watch a lot of media through my PC - DVDs, video clips, etcetera.

My current monitor is ok - a pretty standard 19" Iiyama - but I'd like to watch them on something a bit bigger and classier.

That will be my primary function for this monitor, along with use as a general PC monitor for browsing the web and watching TV (Freeview box).

One thing that I'm worried about greatly is talk of backlight bleeding. I enjoy shows like Lost, which feature many dark scenes.

Is backlight bleeding likely to compromise my enjoyment? Or is it only very minor?

And also, I understand that the monitor will come without any cables other than the power cord.

Is my choice of monitor cable likely to affect picture quality much?

And what sort of cable do I need in order to have audio from my PC play through the monitor's speakers?

I've heard a few complaints about the sound, which isn't a problem to me as I can easily buy some external speakers.

So what do you reckon? Worth me going for? If not, any alternative suggestions would be very welcome!

I have this exact model, purchased from Play.com a few months ago (you can see my review there)

To answer your questions:

Firstly although it's 22" remember that a 19" non widescreen is a taller picture than a 22" widescreen as the measurement is diagonal. A 19" usually runs at 1280x1024 whereas the 22" is 1650x1080 so you can see that's a little less height but of course more width!

Note that this screen isn't 16/9 widescreen, it's 16:10 which means it's everso slightly less wide than a 'proper' widescreen TV - I believe many other 19" and 22" monitors are the same. What this can mean is that a widescreen image from Sky or DVD (using the non PC inputer) can be slightly stretched vertically... this effect is not really an issue and only really noticable when watching a testcard!

See the thread HERE which I wrote about at AVForums.

Backlight bleed on mine is very minor and I've seen the exact same issue on a 19" Samsung 940 TV/Monitor.... however I think this backlight issue varies from one to another as some people really complain and others don't. I only notice this issue when there's a totally black screen (no image) and haven't noticed it on normal PC or TV images.

There are no cables supplied except the power cable... so you need either a 15pin VGA computer lead or if your PC has DVI graphics output you can use a DVI to HDMI lead, I do this and it works well. I have done comparisons and cannot see any improvement using HDMI over VGA however, not a jot except the monitor auto corrects better with HDMI if using non native screen resolutions.

Getting audio from the PC to the TV is done with a 3.5mm stereo jack plug lead (same plug at each end) and the TV has a socket on the rear next to the VGA and HDMI sockets. Note that VGA and HDMI share this audio input so if you want to use VGA for a PC and HDMI for something else, then you may have to plug/unplug when switching inputs.

The built in speakers aren't great, in fact I'd say they pretty poor for a 'TV' but they're fine for a monitor.... I use them but there's another 3.5mm headphone socket on the rear where you can plug in some amplified speakers (like you'd use on an Ipod or a PC) if you want meatier sound.

Overall I'm really pleased with 22LS4R and for £249 it's a bargain, just as long as you don't expect utter perfection in every area..... it's a damned cheap deal really.

Take a look at the AVforums link above, there are some negative comments but on the whole a well received TV

hahaha.. I see you also asked this question over at the AVforums..... so you already know all the answers I gave!

That should be enough to help you decide.

Haha, yeah. Thought it was best to double my chances of a reply!

Thank you for your advice. It all sounds pretty encouraging. I'm not a fussy person, so I can live with a few small deficiencies anyway.

I just have one more slight query - at the moment, my PC won't let me go to a screen resolution beyond 1600x1200.

I assume this is because this is the maximum my current monitor can handle, and I'll have the option to go higher if I plug in a 22" display?

And also, does viewing webpages at such a high resolution not make them seem a little out of proportion?

You'll have to forgive me if those seem like stupid questions, but I just want to make sure I have all my bases covered!

Those are good questions actually..... not all graphics cards can deal with this resolution....I've even read that Vista drivers for popular cards have had this issue (not sure if they've overcome it now)

Certainly my Radeon 9700 has no problem or did my Radeon 8500dv have any troubles but onboard graphics on my older P3 (Intel 815 graphics) computer couldn't deal with it and that's a limitation of the older hardware.

When I plugged in my LG, the graphics option 1650x1080 appeared whereas it wasn't available on my older 19" LG so I assume the PC knew what to offer for this 22".

Web pages are a bit hit and miss... Digital Spy fills the screen perfectly as do many other sites, some however use 800x600 centred or left sided and look a bit silly with nearly 2/3rds empty screen!......

Well, I took the plunge and decided to buy it. Ordered last Thursday from Play.com, arrived this morning.

I'm delighted to say that it's exceeded all my expecatations. Both PC and TV look fantastic and I couldn't be happier. Even the sound is fine by me.

There is just a little backlight bleed during dark scenes, but I can live with it.

And also, 1650x1080 does not display well for me - 1440x900 is giving me much better results.

But anyway, I'm very satisfied and would give this monitor my highest recommendation.
