I watched Raph's website of DWTS. I am seriously not sure if they are doing foxtrot or American Smooth?

You can't fault them on entertaining value, but it's not STRICTLY ballroom. Perhaps the American version is called Dancing with the Stars because there is very little in resemblance to actual ballroom dances...

As I understand it their foxtrot is what we would call american smooth.

They dont seem to be as strict - I'm sure there was a lift in Mel B's quickstep and no-one mentioned it.

There was a lift in Helio's so-called foxtrot in the beginning as well if memory serves me well.

I am GLAD SCD is starting. They are far stricter in SCD and that makes SCD better (less flashy but more substance because there are more discipline with their routine). Too much messing about with DWTS, esp that cheetah girl. What on earth is THAT that she's dancing???

Never understand hip-hop...

To be fair, these are the genuine American versions of the ballroom dances...with the exception of lifts. They spend a lot of time out of hold.

Oh dear Jennie and Derek don't look as if they get on too well - she looked very annoyed and upset at the mistake at the end. Helio was amazing - I love him, he seems so nice!!

I don't have UK Gold. Watching the youtube version. I think if I see Helio and Julianne's 'foxtrot' as AS then they are actually doing VERY well for first week. He has very good posture (like Matt Dawson in week 8 but with more sway!), when they are in hold it's proper ballroom hold with no gap between them. For them to achieve that in week one *is* phenomenal. And they look very cute together. Charming pair they are...

Apollo and Helio. They seem to rhyme...

Hi bigtoe, hi everyone.

Arrrrgh, couldn't get on the DS site for ages, but am watching the webcam!

Such a shame that Derek and Partner fell, he is so cute and how she mocked him for not being "butch enough" - silly woman, I'd love to dance with him anyday, he's adorable.

Thank Gawd for Julianne & Derek, cos the other Pros just don't do it for me. Those other Quicksteps to pop songs just don't cut the mustard IMO.

Oh to see a classy Quickstep to a standard like Nat King Cole. Remember Ian and Zoe's? - sooo classy in comparison.

Eeek at the snake! But I really enjoyed Jane's Mambo, thought the comments and marks were harsh.

I think Jennie needs to get a lot more respect for her partner and to start realising that she needs to work with him not against him. He may be young, but he knows what he's doing and can do it a lot better than many older pros.

I really like Julianne, Derek and Mark. I have also been a fan of Karina's for many, many years. She's just a legend - an awesome dancer. It's a shame she hasn't got a partner she can show her talent with this year.

The pros get little choice over music in the States.

Mark's choreo for the QS was excellent and they used the most appropriate song too, danced very well by Sabrina, but already I'm sensing 2 of the Judges, Len and Carry-Ann don't like her. She is basically a professional, and she danced it very well, the best QS by far of the night, but also by far the best choreo by Mark who deserves alot of credit IMO. Maks et al had recycled pedestrian choreo from last season, and really need to buck up their ideas.

Len & Bruno had a row, Bruno was an irritating git, I'd have told him to shut up too.

Was glad that Helio and Julianne won, as he is a racing driver, and Sabrina is a dancer already, however good she is. I do like the fact that she's plump though, and not a size 6.

Drew is getting on my nerves, how on earth the combo of Drew & Cheryl won, I have no idea, they would bore me to tears combined, having not seen their dances, just based on personality.

I'd like to see the old singer go, but my guess is the Billionaire will.

If I may be so bold SCD-O, I made a blog about it:

A Rant on the Different Style of American Ballroom Dancing!

With some video links to illustrate.

In America their style of Foxtrot IS the American Smooth. It's just one of the differences between the US and UK Ballroom rules.

What happened to Jennie and Derek? I can't find them on Youtube at all. Was there an incident?

I remembered watching on youtube dances by a Mario guy and his tango wasn't a tango (too many times breaking hold and acting up but no signs of proper tango) and his waltz wasn't even remotely like a waltz (again a lot of story-telling and breaking hold) except the three-beat tune he's dancing to.

Seems like things don't change much since?

The Americans really go for performance and entertainment value, and don't really pay that much attention on the 'nitty-gritty' of each dance.

I also recalled watching Apollo's rhumba and I think he even had a prop (chair?). Really bizarre.

To be fair, the American ballroom scene is quite strict - just a bit bigger than in Europe...

Taken from the MIT university ballroom team website...

Competitive Dances
There are 19 competitive ballroom dances, 10 in the International style and 9 in the Amercan style. They are further subdivided into Standard and Latin (International) and Smooth and Rhythm (American).
Standard

* International Waltz
* International Tango
* International Viennese Waltz
* International Foxtrot
* International Quickstep

Latin

* International Cha Cha
* International Samba
* International Rumba
* International Paso Doble
* International Jive

Smooth

* American Waltz
* American Tango
* American Foxtrot
* American Viennese Waltz

Rhythm

* American Cha Cha
* American Rumba
* American Swing
* American Bolero
* American Mambo

So the Americans are quite aware of the 10 dance international, but add another 9 as well.

The American foxtrot allows the woman to spin out of hold (a la Fred and Ginger). Lifts (lasting more than 1 beat) are not usually permitted except in ¨Theatrical¨, ¨Cabaret¨ or ¨Showdance¨ presentations.

But as alot of the Pros on DWTS are from Europe and one from Australia, why do they dance only the Smooth versions of every single Ballroom rhythm?
Presumably it's a dictat from on high that they do?
Fred & Ginger were all about technique, I didn't see very much technique in many of the Quicksteps last night. When you consider the high standard of some of the Waltzes, Fox Trots and VWs on SCD over the years, and the Tangos that both Ian and Anton have choreographed, I do find overall the Ballroom side of DWTS quite lacking. Only occasionally I will see a very entertaining routine like Julianne & Helios's FT, or an Adams Family Tango choreographed by Edyta I've seen on youtube from a previous series.
On the other hand, the Latin dances are very good, and on the whole better than on SCD.
I guess it's like Football. The whole world plays Football, and the Americans play something called American Football.

BTW posted by katie in another thread, Len is interviewed about flying back and forth to Judge. On the right here:

Out of week 1 in DWTS I realise for the women I like Jane Seymour's quite a bit and couldn't take my eyes off Helio and Julianne. They have the chemistry in spades and did a very good 'American Smooth' style 'Foxtrot'. I am not a technical dancer but having watched how Matt Dawson did his Foxtrot and American Smooth last year, I noticed that even though Helio is very smooth and his posture is excellent for someone to do in week one, there *seemed* to have no heel leads from him.

I have just now seen Helio's mambo and am a little underwhelmed. Though he is supposed to have some Latin blood in him, he would need to work much harder on loosening his hips. It's still rather stiff and his upper body is still rather 'rigid' for a latin dance; he needs, to a layman's eyes of mine, a more 'relaxed' posture. So I am surprised that the judges all gave him nine.

This is the thing I notice in DWTS. They are SO generous with their scores it's ridiculous.
