The product I am interested is up on eBay and its item number is 300149424069 I do not know how to create a link (Sorry) if it is suitable, GREAT! If not any suggestions are welcome.

Hi, the item you have sent me a link to, is this suitable for what I need? I am a bit of a techno-phobe so I would be obliged if you could let me know why this item is more suitable than the one I mentioned in the original post please..

Thanks

C'mon Cat - it IS the one you're after. Cardbus has helpfully set up a link so that others can check this against your requirements.

I've just had a look and it has 2 optical digital inputs an 1 coaxial digital input (good stuff) plus 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output.

You will beable to connect your Sky HD (using optical for sound and HDMI for video) and the same for your DVD recorder. You can play DVDs on the new unit or on the DVDR using the Sony to provide surround sound.

The HDMI out from the Sony can connect to your TV.

Rgds,
Scorp

ps can anyone advise as to whether the optical input for Sky HD is necessary or can the Sony pickup 6 channel digital sound fromn the HDMI input?

I have nearly made up my mind on this but you do realise this item does NOT come with a DVD player of any sort, its just a 5.1 speaker system and Amp? thats all?

Cat, no worries, this is the sort of thing I have at home (it's a slightly different Sony).

I play DVDs on my recorder and just plug the optical audio out from the recorder into the back of the Sony.

This should work fine for you.

It's by far the best way to do it - a surround sound system with in-built DVD is just asking for a short life. DVD players don't generally last very long, and it's MUCH cheaper to buy a new DVD player than have the old one repaired.

Its sk THE cat here, that last link took me to a AV system without a DVD recorder/player. Could somebody point me to a decent DVD Recorder that I can attach to the Sony mentioned in the link from Cardbus earlier in the thread.

Thanks;

Hi all, cat here again, (I do have a job by the way) I don't usually post during the day but I am on hol at the mo.

I think I need a DVD Recorder with at least a HDMI in & out? so I can go
Skybox--> DVDR--> Home theatre--> LCD TV?? I think, the LCD TV only has 1 HDMI in.

Not sure you if you will find a DVD recorder with HDMI in/out, but it would also need optical in/out as the Sky HD does not send audio over HDMI.

I have the SS1000. Sky HD into it with HDMI/Optical. Non HDMI DVD recorder into TV with Scart, to SS1000 with Opitcal and Sky HD with Scart. In the year I have had Sky HD, I have only put 1 or 2 programmes onto DVD. Nearly all my viewing is now on Sky.

If you are just concerned about running out of space on the Sky box, you could also install a larger disk.

As I have said in earlier thread, I record ALL SKy Sport Speedway to DVD for Posterity, I have only missed a couple of live shows since they started showing it live in 1995!
If recorders don't have HDMI in and out their must be a standard way to connect to TV ?
