Does 17070 only return the number on a closed line? I tried it and could only get a quiet test.
just means you have number withheld on your line. dial 1470 17070 then it will return the number.

We're about to move house so could really use a voucher for the £124. Our friends have just thrown one away. Does anyone know how we could find one...or any discount?

We intend to rent the line from BT (because we're obliged to rent it for 12 months once it's installed), but want to keep our phone package with Talktalk, so I don't know if that will mean we're not eligible for any deals.

Thanks.

I just had a BT line installed last week ( for the first time ever-having never owned a landline/broadband. And was delighted that I had got an "online offer" on the connection charge I think in total It only costed me like £30 to get the line installed instead of the usual £125. Needless to say I was chuffed

But if you get the line installed for £30 there are conditions, like signing your life away to BT.

If you move at a later date to a new house and you are on a minimum contract or a rolling contract then there may be fees to pay.

I'd like to have a choice of going with someone else who could install your line and you have a deal with them.

I quite fancy the post office tel service but I don't think they install a new line, or if I line is there and hasn't been used for a while if you can connect to them when you move in.

Be good for the consumer if there were a few choices for a landline.

It would be nice, but...

We wanted to go with Sky for line rental, but we would still be obliged to pay BT for 12 months in addition to paying Sky. Once BT put a line in you are obliged to pay for a 12 month contract. After 12 months you can sack BT and pay for cheaper line rental from anyone you like.

If you get the cheap £30 install isn't it 18 months contracts ????

And if you want free evening calls you renew after 18 for a further 12 months.

I think the price for BT's installation is a joke. I had a BT line installed about a year and a half ago and almost paid that stupid fee but due to their sheer incompetance didnt. To cut a long story short they charged me for 2 line rentals and 2 installation fees (When I only had 1 line) and then refunded me twice, despite me calling them and telling them that they had done this twice. In the end I wasnt going to beg them to take back their money. So this is how I didnt end up paying the installation fee.

Nice one.

The mobile phone companies also try to tie you up like a kipper to a long contract but at least if you move house all you do is put your mobile phone in your pocket.

Yes, it is... but I think it's only on the basic landline, fairly certain they don't force you to take a higher package... but, still, it's free at the moment anyway!

I'm not too keen on giving BT money every month to rent an old copper wire to their tel exchange,in fact 'Im not to keen on giving BT money......full stop.

If people didn't need a line for internet they'd have hardly any customers left by now.

I rang 0800 085 2790 quoted 'save on connection' today and got free installation booked in. They even threw in free caller-display. The only catch was it's an 18-month contract.

I know someone who got into billing probs with BT and had their service cut off. When they tried to get service resumed they were told it would be a new connection, a provide.

This was bollocks. There was still a dial tone, and even if there was not the only link broken would have been either at the exchange or a DP. This would only have been done to provide another customer with service. Making a charge of £125 to run a jumper from one termination to another sounds like robbery to me.

They also tried to charge my mother for a provide at a sheltered accommodation. I was working for them at the time and was able to point out that a line had been installed in that flat for years so all they had to do was a start. In fact the previous deceased tenant had service there just a few weeks earlier. I blame the call centres got this. Kid someone on that they need a provide, i.e. a new sale and there has to be something in it for the agent.

The installation charge is actually raised by openreach and not by BT. If they need to send an engineer for installation they will charge. When placing the order we will do everything to check for availability and existing lines to try to save you as much as possible with the installation.

hope that helps

we charge the CP's i.e you, not the EU. wether you choose to pass the charge on (plus a little extra for the paperwork) is your decision.

Hello,

Openreachpeep, you are quite right (well, you should be, you do work for Openreach after all ), Openreach raise their own charges to the service providers, and then it's up to BT (or your service provider of choice) to pass the charge on to the customer or not. Openreach engineers will not know whether the service provider will raise the charge to the customer.

The BT connection charge is only raised on very specific occasions, e.g. where there is no suitable BT line available in the property or no dialling tone on the line, and the BT advisor that is placing the order will let the customer know of the charge (if applicable) before they complete the order.

All the best,

Stephanie
