Using a foreign network whilst abroad
If i've worded that title properly!!!
You know what i mean .. going to spain, and calls back to the UK are ridiculously prices, and the promised cut on call costs by the EU doesn't seem to have happened (can't remember hearing about it!!) So ... if i go to Spain, is it more effective to use a local sim card on a PAYG network? If so, do any of the high street shops sell them? sorry, new to all this, so any help or advice appreciated

I used to use foreign pay-as-you-go SIMs, but since 3 have decided to let you use your contract minutes on any of their 3 networks abroad, it's not worth it anymore.

Thanks guys, but it doesn't really answer the question about getting a foreign sim ... i'm on Virgin PAYG (although i pay by Direct Debit every month) and hardly use my mobile - i'm not one of these people who have been convinced that i need to text someone every 2 mins to survive!!!
Therefore, i aint looking at a contract, or changing my current setup, but i have an unlocked Virgin phone that i can put any sim in ... can i buy one here, or do i need to wade through the language barrier abroad to buy one? (I've seen them on the net, but i've left that option a bit late!! )

I use a SIM from Story Telecom, it costs £25 with £25 of credit so the SIM is free. Its a UK phone number but there are NO roaming charges. For some reason calls are priced in USD and are 56 cents a minute (currently about 23p) The credit lasts for 12 months. For more info call them on 0800 65 12345
Hope that helps |

We're travelling to France in a couple of weeks and I was intending to get French sim cards - there will be 8 of us and I figured it will be a cheaper way for us all to keep contact while over there.
It appears though from a brief google session that sims are fairly expensive compared to PAYG sims over here. Is it possible to get French sims for less than about £30?? Is it a better (read "cheaper") option to buy sims whilst over there? |
