Ipod Touch - UK model has screen problems
nl74
19-09-2007
I picked up a 16gb touch yesterday from the bluewater store and immediately noticed the screen problem with dark scenes. It seems that this problem is not exclusive to those shipped in America.

It was wierd as it did at times seem better than others but overall the quality was not as crisp as my 5.5 pod even if the screen is bigger. What I did notice was that the viewing angle was very narrow and looking at it flat on was not the best angle. I found tilted very slightly backwards (as it would be if viewed on the enclosed stand) was best. Overall though it felt like viewing a computer monitor that has one of those screen privacy filters fitted.

Overall apart from the screen it is a great piece of kit and I have every confidence that Apple will fix this either via firmware (if possible) or an exchange. Having logged in at the ilounge it seems people in the states have been exchanging them only to get the same thing, more worryingly the problem appears to be widespread over there. If it is hardware and does need replacing I am guessing it will be best to wait until new batches come in. If Apple fail to address this then imo the quality is not acceptable and I will take it back for a refund within the 14 days (will try and get this pre-agreed when I take it into the genius bar later on). Given their reputation for quality however I would right now say that I trust them to get this right and would be happy to persevere with my current model if I knew for sure that this was the case.

Worrying. Given that they had not announced they'd be out in the UK before the 28th Sept it's strange that they've put them into shops knowing there are issues with the screen.

It's also odd that there's been no word from Apple on this. Are they just accepting that the screens are of a lower quality that the iPhone? I'd be interested to hear what the store tell you when you go in.

I've just picked one up from Regent Street. I hope to god that they're isn't a problem with it...

Will be interested to hear how you get on with yours.

I may not take mine back today, I think it may be best to let the dust settle and I do have 14 days so it won't hurt to wait till the weekend. I may ring Apple tech support though.

I'd be amazed if an official announcement is not iminent and as I said I'd expect Apple to do the right thing here.

You need to view something with a dark scene to see the effect, bright scenes look just fine.

Mm, I haven't got any movies to view at the moment. I'm going to try and view some movie trailers or something and I'll report back.

There is definitely a problem with the screen, the dark images are slightly distorted. If Apple don't make some sort of announcement about it, I'll just take it back with the 14 days and get a refund.

I suggest people wait at least a few weeks until Apple get newer batches in.

I have 12 days until the 14 are up and I am going to hold fire until nearer then to take it back for an exchange, by then I would guess they will have had another batch in.

It may not be hardware and we could see a firmware fix (probably unlikely). It is all over the internet but I suppose it needs to find it's way to the mainstream press before Apple will feel obliged to make any public comment.

“Some contributors to the iLounge and Apple discussion forums have expressed dismay that Apple Stores have charged them $30 to $40 restocking fees when they’ve attempted to return iPod touch units with dark screens”

WTF?

It's an American thing does not apply in the UK.

Looks to be (almost) official now. I'll just keep in touch with my local apple store and find out when they get another batch of units in for a swap over

Both the reports of Apple acknowledging the problem have come from the same report which doesn't give the source (just says it comes from Apple). This is in the Wall Street Journal though, so hopefully reliable.

If we see something official from Apple in the next few days it'd be good, since then I'll be able decide whether to cancel my Touch order before it's dispatched.

My screens is fine "I think". It doesn't look as good as I was expecting and no doubt if I never heard anything about the screen problems I would be delighted with it. I think i'm am just scrutinizing the screen too much and finding the odd fault.

Have a look at this

it would seem that pods with model serial number ending 37 (meaning week 37) are affected which mine is.

This should make it easier to identify a potential non-faulty replacement, not sure if the bluewater store will have any 38's in yet as I think they only get 1 delivery a week.

I'm going to ring the Brent Cross store today to find out about their stock, but I doubt they'll have any 38s in yet.

What a nightmare, just trying to get a decent player!
