Unlocked phones at Carphonew'house?

Be gentle with me as I'm new to this and don't really know what I'm talking about!

We're looking at getting 2 new phones and are currently on Virgin PAYG Monthly which we're happy with so we've been having a look at handsets in various places. Went to Carphonewarehouse this morning and salesman told us that all their PAYG phones were sold unlocked. If this is the case (I think he was stringing us a line...), can I buy the phone I like at the cheapest price but put my old Virgin SIM card in it? There appeared to be a £20 difference between the cheapest network and the Virgin cost. I realise I'd still have to buy the compulsory airtime at around £10 for the other network but that still made the phone cheaper. Can't be that simple can it?

hi
Yes they are unlocked and will accept any sim, you just need to buy the airtme to get the cheapest deal though

As above it is correct. I'm on Virgin 300 txt/mins for £10 deal and I wanted a new phone so I just went to CPW and bought the phone I wanted on the cheapest network (which was Virgin anyway lol) and it was already unlocked and no branding etc.

They just give you and unlocked handset and a PAYG Sim card. I just stuck the new Virgin SI in a draw I don't need it but its handy for emergancies.

Thanks for the quick responses and for confirming what we'd hoped. We were a bit suspicious of the salesman to be honest - despite telling him we were with Virgin PAYG, happy etc. and that I spent (at most) only £1 or £2 per month (yes, you did read that correctly!) he tried to get us to buy an expensive Orange phone at £10 a month! I doubt I spend that in a year. CPW it is then.
