Help! Creative Zen Xtra 30gb - Completely lost music library
IzzyS
20-09-2007
This is seriously not a good time for me *sigh* ok basically I switched my MP3 Player on (which is a Creative Zen Xtra 30GB model, with version 1.03.02 installed) and it came up with a message saying 're-building library'.

When the usual menu screen came on, I went to 'now playing' after waiting a few seconds and hearing no music and it indicated there that no track had been selected and it showed the part in the top right that usually indicates the track number out of the total number of tracks as being '--/0' which worried me, so I went back to the menu and 'music library' and selected 'all tracks' but that screen showed nothing! no tracks at all... and I had over 2,000!

I've checked and the playlists are still showing up under music library, though if you select one, it won't play anything and there's nothing under albums, artists or genres

However, when I go to 'Settings' and select 'about', it shows the following -

'Total Space: 28595MB
Free Space: 15901MB
Track count: 0
Album count: 0
Playlist count: 156'

so its somehow kept the playlists and the difference between the free space and the total space indicates to me that the tracks are still there somewhere, maybe it just can't detect them or something I don't know but clearly its indicating that the same amount of memory is used as was a day or so back when all the tracks were there.

Now the only thing I've used my MP3 player for recently was over the last few days I have, I'll admit, been deleting tracks, I'd been deleting interviews and sound files of a group im not so interested in anymore but it seemed fine and still played the music tracks... I haven't had this problem before and I've had this MP3 player since I believe it was January 2004 I got it... I've tried resetting it but it does the same thing, showing 're-building library' and the 'settings' -> 'about' screen still shows the info. listed above...

What should I do? any advice? if its fixable, is it likely this will happen alot and should I maybe think about getting a new MP3 player? I don't know... there are/were alot of tracks on it, not all of them on my laptop and I don't want to lose them if I can at all avoid it! any help is very much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Okay since it happened, I tried searching on Creatives site and found the MP3 recovery tool but my MP3 player model isn't supported, I guess it is a bit old since its only black & white screen and all but its still a Creative model and only a few years old... what a nuisance, it says to check the model is supported before running it... so I guess its not worth trying it since its not supported... but then I followed a link to this page, which doesn't mention supported models, so I don't know if this is a modified program that works on all models or not(?) see:- http://ask.creative.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=ww_english_add,U={B8F60310-DA4F-11D3-94F4-00500463020E},Company={CEAE216D-8719-4C00-AC9F-03BC258F7B70},d=1130251443648,VARSET=ws:http://www.creative.com,case=40402
should I try it anyway?

edit:- grr I just tried connecting it to my laptop and got this message from Windows Media Player -
Quote:
“Your device is using an outdated driver that is no longer supported by Windows Media Player. For additional assistance, click Web Help.”

ist not THAT old... blah... I never had problems with this sort of thing before.

Update - Okay now when I connect it up to my laptop and ignore that error message mentioned above, I went to 'my computer' and found the right icon there, for 'NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra' but when I double click on that it loads an empty folder... I've managed to get access to my data library, the data files appear to still be accessible there but under music library again its coming up blank as if there's nothing there.

Its not looking good, eh? I tried the obvious basic things like setting my MP3 player back to the factory default settings but that only affects the basic settings and didn't change anything in the library and I reset it and obviously ive tried accessing files with it hooked up to my laptop and thats not worked... and the Creative site like I say only seems to properly support newer models not this one, though its under 4 years old... but obv. since it is a few years old it isn't under warranty anymore *sigh* I already have to pay for my car insurance which isnt cheap and I need a new laptop, will I have to buy a new MP3 player too? if anyone knows of any really good Creative forums for discussing MP3 player problems that would include ones with the older models like my Zen Xtra 30gb please let me know!! many thanks!!

Oh well after a bit of work the good news for me is that I managed to get 1969 tracks back its still not entirely fixed though, its just missing about 500 tracks or so and still has a habit of loading and crashing on the 're-building library' screen when I switch it on and it doesn't fully work when I run the scan disk, it always crashes at 77% but somehow I got 1969 tracks back and was able to transfer them all back to my laptop *phew* what a relief! im not sure whats happened to the rest of my tracks or how reliable the MP3 Player will be, I'm suspicious might have to buy a new one soon... I posted for help on the anythingbutipod forums theres one for my Mp3 Player model, so ill have to wait and see if anyone there can help, thats just what I was looking for, thanks again Richard!
