Blu Ray Calibration geeks rejoice!

Finally, DVE is coming to Blu Ray, hopefully with lots of new test patterns. Geeky, I know, but I love tinkering with the settings on my telly! Anyone know when Avia 2 is out? I pre-ordered it months ago but I think I'll cancel it now.

Just wondering, with the version you've got, how would you say it compares to a THX Optimiser? I last tested my set-up using the one included in the "Alien" DVD boxset, but have added an HD-DVD deck since.

The Toshiba literature tells me that my 5.1 DTS amp will now decode HD-DVD soundtracks as 5.1 "DTS Encore" (twice the resolution of standard DTS apparently).

It's certainly very clear and well balanced at the moment, but I wondered if there are any specific HD tests that might help me squeeze a little extra perfomance out?

Minor correction, I had the US HD DVD so the combo was HD DVD/NTSC

I've never used the THX setup test on my LCD, used it on my previous RPTV but when I went HD I adjusted things to suit the HD streamed from the PC and tweaked other inputs as required.
When I went HD DVD then I got the DVE calibration disk and went from there and to be honest it's not exactly a walk in the park, just so many tests and tweaks you can do.

The HD demo material helps matters but again there is some reference material on HD media as on SKY/BBC HD so I suspect you'll be pretty satisfied with what you have.

As for "Encore" as I understand it it's a label that covers the ability for DTS runs at full 1.5Mb/s bitrate from HD DVD while allowing the higher spec DD/DTS soundtracks to exist side by side.

Cheers Jarrak

The DVE disc's cheap enough, so I'll probably just get one and amuse myself (or possibly drive myself mad) with a few geek tweaks.

RE Encore
I looked a little closer myself and was surprised to find out that DVD video only outputs a maxium 768kb/s bitrate. I'd always assumed that DVD's with a DTS soundtrack output at 1.5Mb/s, but it would seem that they've only ever been able to make use of half the data capability of DTS.

Great news for anyone thinking of upgrading to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, your existing 5.1 amp/receiver will get a considerable audio quality boost. No need to upgrade unless you simply must have lossless sound.

It's great. I'm hearing full DTS for the first time, despite my amp having given me constant service with DVD's for about 7 years.

Thanks for that Apollo - I've been convinced that the sound quality is better on Blu Ray than dvd, but at the same time I was thinking that it couldn't be since I use DTS 5.1 on both formats.

So, Blu Ray is better than dvd not just for the picture quality, but for the sound too! I watched Mission Impossible 2 a couple of days ago, and both picture and sound were superb. I can't get enough of HD at the moment!
