Ipod touch - Anybody returned theirs?

It seems that the picture is becoming clearer on the screen issues and that Apple has partially admitted it. From what I can tell here is the story so far:

- The faulty screens are affecting models built in weeks 36 and 37 (this can be identified by looking at the 4th and 5th digit on your serial number i.e. 9c737xxxxx
what is not clear is whether all 36 and 37's are affected or if all 38's onwards are totally fine? Does anybody out there have a 36 or a 37 that is ok or a 38 with problems?

- Despite Apple's partial admission apple store staff seem completely unaware of the issue or (more likely) are aware but have been instructed not to acknowledge it.
In the US the Apple stores people are still being charged re-stocking fees, I don't believe this is the case in the UK but will find out for sure when I try and take mine back today.

Has anybody in the UK tried to return their's yet and if so what was your experience? and was the replacement OK?

I was going to wait till next week to exchange mine but after a phone conversation today with an apple store where they totally denied knowledge of any problems I am worried I may have problems the longer I leave it and that they are going to take the Ostrich's approach on this one and that only those who shout loud enough will get a refund or exchange. I am now more willing to exchange for one from the initial batch in the hope that I get a good one.

I would of thought you sales of goods act would come into play inorder to get a refund or replacement as your itouch screen is not up to the job. Demo a video to them to show how bad it is.

I like the itouch but I going to hold out for 2nd generation when hopefully capacity will be larger

I'm going to wait until they receive the week 38 batch in stores, apparently these are okay on the whole.

All you need to do is take the ipod in store and demonstrate Jay Z's, The Black Album, it will clearly show the negative blacks.

i've just returned from holiday in the US where I bought an 8gb iPod Touch which has one of these serial numbers. As best I can tell the colours look fine but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

The iTunes store doesn't have a video for Jay-Z Black Album as suggested by previous poster. Could anyone give me advice on a video that I can get from the iTunes store that will clearly show the problem?

You just need to get the video from You Tube, that's what I did. There is no way the assistants in the store can argue with it.

I'm going to take mine back to Regent Street tomorrow, they should at least have some decent models in now.

Has anyone taken theirs back and received a good replacement?

Re my post above, I've not checked recently, but I don't think You Tube is working at the moment for the touch, but it may be sorted now.

As for the screens, I've just heard that there is an update for it, apparently if you download the firmware 1.1.1 it will resolve the problem.

I downloaded the update and it is indeed much better.

The apple store just rang and told me my replacement is in and I can pick it up.

Unless I hear or see proof otherwise (not seen any picture4s of fixed 37's vs 38's yet) I suspect that the 37's probably do have a harware fault that has been compensated for with a fw update so I am still going to swap mine over today, can't hurt.

I downloaded the software and the display is gorgeous. I only had a small problem before so I'm keeping the one I have - very pleased.

hmm i know this isnt about the ipod touch but the new nano but i didnt really want to start a new thread, its just that the sound on it isnt very loud at all... id say the loudest it goes is just average, the settings on the ipod are right and its not the earphones, so i was just wondering whether this is normal with the new nano?
and compared to the loudness of my other ipod its just not loud enough..

the audio is limit is thanks to the EU I think. In itunes you can increase the volume of individual tracks > get info >options >volume adjustment.
You could try different headphones, they all vary a bit.

I am now very frustrated!

I picked up my 3rd ipod touch last night and it has even more dead pixels than the last one and a side-by-side with my PSP demonstrated how bad it is. Also and rather strangely it has the exact same serial number as my original model that I returned a week ago, it was in a different box (Macy Gray) but I am wondering if they are recycling returned pods. I am assuming that no 2 pods should have the same serial number?

Yes thats probably what they have done!

What doesn't make sense though is that in the week I had my original touch the back picked up a few scratches but last nights replacements with the same serial number looked brand new again and obviously had all the wrapping on.

They must have changed the back on-site and re-boxed it? either that or the serial numbers are not all different.

Hopefully the 4th one will be fine.
