Porting PAYG number to contract
Hampton Wick
23-09-2007
Have been doing a little checking around on moving my PAYG over to a contract and it seems that Orange are the only network to allow this - is that true?

I'm pretty sure you can do this on O2 as well. I know you can't do an internal port on T-Mobile.

I'm sure Vodafone can as well ( they did a few years back when I worked in Ports & Migrations at Singlepoint).

Are you sure? My mate is on T-Mobile and he called them asking about switching to contract from PAYG and they said he could keep his number.

If you can't I guess the way around it is to port to another network then port back.

So you can port a PAYG from one network to a contract on another?

I'm asking since I currently have an Orange PAYG number, which was ported from a contract a few months back with the express purpose of later porting back to a contract to get a 'new customer' deal. (My contract was so old there was no way to offer an upgrade).

However, the phone that I'm waiting for (HTC Kaiser/ TyTn II) shows no sign of appearing on Orange so I'm thinking of going over to T-Mob or O2.

I had a Virgin PAYG and have just swapped to a contract - took some doing, though, as initial calls told me it couldnt be done, bet I kept persevering

On Orange it is easily done instore using enable. If you have had an Orange PAYG for at least 6 months, you get to keep your number AND get a 10% line rental discount on your new contract.

A few years ago I done this on o2, (or what ever it was called when I done it). They sent me a 2 new sims one to start the contract, and then another one with the PAYG number on a contract sim.

Simple. Get the PAC code from Virgin. Get your O2 contract. Give O2 the PAC code. They will give you a temporary number when you take your contract then port your Virgin number over after receipt of the PAC code.

I got the following reply from Virgin today....

Quote:
“Hi ******,

Thanks for your email to Virgin Mobile requesting your PAC code.

We're really sorry to hear that you've decided to move your number to another network. We hope that you weren't unhappy with our service, but if you were please let us know and we'll see what we can do to help.

When you transfer a number from one network to another you need to use a PAC, or Port Authorisation Code. This is a code recognised by all service providers - it lets them know which service provider you're transferring from.

You'll need to take your PAC code to your new service provider who'll arrange the transfer for you. Just remember that it needs to reach them within 30 days. If they haven't received it by 5pm on the thirtieth day, it'll expire and you won't be able to arrange your transfer. If this happens, you can just carry on using the Virgin Mobile service as normal or request another PAC code.

We've passed your details to our Technical Team, they'll be in contact within 48 hours with your PAC code.

Etc , Etc ....”

I just hope 02 will accept the Pac code and transfer the Virgin PAYG number to my new Contract on 02

next question

If I port my PAYG number onto my contract phone , what happens with future redemption claims ?

The bill I need to send in will obviously show the new ported number and won't relate to the old number that had 3 redemptions allocated to it and so would be rejected ?

your account number will still be the same, its just the phone number that's changed. Only the dodgier type of cashback will use this to refuse your claim.
