Denon AVR2307/AVR2308 alternative
stainless
23-09-2007
I am buying a new home entertainment system and have been contemplating buying the Denon AVR2307 or even the new 2308.

However, due to Denon's tight restrictions regarding sales of these only from actual retail outlets, thus preventing any price reductions on the net, I am thinking about looking at alternatives, and thus, hopefully getting a better deal.

Any suggestions on similar AV amps gratefully accepted.Cheers

I'm a great fan of Denon kit but Yamaha surround receivers are also rated very highly - see link
- the Yamaha RX-N600D gets good ratings but doesn't have HDMI connectivity.

If you are looking for value for money more than pure sound quality then maybe a Sony surround reciever is worth a look - see link
- the Sony STR-DA1200ES won What Hi-fi product of the year 2006.

The spec of the Denon AVR 2308 does look tempting though.

I will look into the Yamaha.

However, I thought I would make the challenge doubly difficult.

Given that I am considering the Pioneer PDP428XD plasma screen at £1535, and have a budget of £3K or under, what ideas do forum users have regarding the following other required home entertainment separates:

AV amp (see original Denon idea)
Speaker system
DVD player

I guess I am looking at under £1500 for all of these. Sadly, the shops I have been too in Sheffield all seem to be recommending separates that are impossible to find on the internet (eg. the Denon amp, B&W MT10 speakers) and thus, I think I would be paying over the odds.

Cheers

Have a look at this site for some deals with the Denon AVR 2308 (1.3a HDMI / 1080p) - link. It's worth giving them a ring for a quote on a total Receiver Amp / Speaker/ DVD package.

The Q Accoustics 1000 and the KEF 2005.2 are both excellent surround speakers.

Denon DVD 1940 (IMO very good value for money) or Denon DVD 2930 for the DVD player (sorry for the Denon bias) would be worth considering.

Thanks for the info.

I have looked at Creative Audio but I currently do not drive and asking any of my mates to travel from Sheffield to Shrewsbury is probably not on.

Thus, the fact that the Denon cannot be shipped is an issue with these value package deals.

There are retailers in Sheffield that stock the Denon but I know that these dealers do not have such reduced price package deals (i guess I could barter on the DVD and speakers).

Obviously, I could get the Denon separately (although I have only seen the 2307 in the Sheffield shops but haven't been in this month, so they may be stocked).

Any internet deals would probably have to be just on the speakers and DVD IF I went with the Denon. Otherwise, I could certainly look at deals with other AV amps on the internet.

My life is never simple!

I got my Denon kit from Creative Audio, and can confirm that for me it was well worth the drive from Watford to Shrewsbury for the discounts available over anything i could get locally.
