Does anybody have experience of using a laptop to play back HD discs through an HDMI link to a large screen TV? Did you have any problems?

I've never tried a laptop, it's probably not so easy to get a laptop fast enough?.

Sony provided their dealers demo computers (Sempron based) which had a DVI video card - these worked fine playing the HD demo disks - but they didn't run Windows, just a small Linux boot system.

I've played HD DVD's on my Pentium IV 2.8Ghz quite happily, although it doesn't have HDMI or DVI, but that should make no difference.

Thank you Nigel. In a Sony context the FZ11Z has a Blu Ray drive and HDMI port. Some people seem to have played Blu Ray discs on them successfully, but had trouble with the HDMI connection. Probably the software is not quite right yet. Equally Toshiba have Laptops with HD DVD drives and HDMI.

So you're probably talking about HDCP copy protection issues?.

Could be, but that particular model does claim to have HDCP support on the hdmi output.

HDCP seems to be causing LOT'S of problems, with many TV's not working correctly - usually software updates for the TV cures the problems - although I'm not sure what the eventual Pioneer cure was?.

I think the person who had a problem with this particular laptop had a Samsung TV. Since my TV is a Sony I might be safer, but it would be good to know if anyone else has tried this.

Just checked the technical bulletins, there's none listed about HDMI problems for that model.

I bought one of these laptops and did have the hdcp problem when I first tried playing a Blu Ray disc through the TV. However I found the answer in the Sony knowledge base. One has to make sure that the laptop's display is disabled before starting the disc player.

In the early days of PC’s the graphics was done in software, but it was slow so the graphics card started doing the work.

Why can’t the HD decoding be done by a dedicated bit of hardware plugged into the USB?
