Ofcom spectrum refarming will create more competition.
So Ofcom want 02 and vodafone to release some of their 900MHz 2G capacity for auction to deliver new 3g services. (As a reward they get to deliver 3G on 900MHz!!! Nice one!!).
Those frequencies will be much more stable than the 2100MHz currently used for 3G and will be vastly easier to roll out as fewer base stations are needed to cover the country. Ofcom will also allow 3g to be provided on 1800MHz which is mainly used by Orange and T-Mobile. So the door is open to another 3 new mobile ops potentially and that should be good news for customers as more operators will drive prices down further. When will all this happen? After 2010 according to Ofcom. See the Ofcom site for the consultation on how this new development could work. |
