I am just moving into a new build. I have rung BT to request connection. They are telling me that I have to take a minimum 1 year contract with them if they connect me. Is this right? I thought that I could get BT to connect me then chose the supplier afterwards?

I did ask all of these questions but kept getting the same answer.

Any help much appreciated.

Yes you have to pay BT for line rental. You can take the basic £11 line rental option (Option 1) then shop around for companies that offer call packages (e.g. free evening/weekend calls) but you still have to pay BT the line rental.

Some telco companies will install a phone line for you (they give BT Openreach, the maintenance side of bt, the instruction to install the line on their behalf), for example TalkTalk.

Im sure someone else can explain further (im new to the whole thing, used to have cable in the old house).

There is a 12 month initial contract for BT - and you will be charged £70 if you cancel in this time.

Other than TalkTalk or BT, who else can make a line live? We have a line into the property, but its not active since the previous occupant moved out. I outright refuse to let either tie myself to BT and charged to leave or have anything to do with the Cowboy Warehouse.

Make the system work in your favour then.

Get a BT line, pay the minimum (£10.50/month for BT Together Option 1 and after the paper-free billing discount) and CPS and/or use prefix providers for your calls immediately.

Thanks to all for the info.

Now i've established that I need to keep BT for a year, I would like wireless BB. Should I look at BT for a package or are there better ideas out there?

Thanks again.

Have they told you weather you will need to pay the 124.99 installation fee?
