After much research I have decided to plum for a Panasonic TX32LXD700HD.

The next question is whether I should buy a TV with a warranty as that clearly impacts the price and there's also the question of should I buy over the internet or in a shop:-

e.g:-

www.cramptonandmoore.co.uk selling TV plus 3 year warranty for £769 on the internet.

john lewis selling TV plus 5 year warranty for £899 (but out of stock) in shop.

Richer Sounds selling TV plus 5 year warranty for £825 (but out of stock) in shop.

Do you have any advice ?

Many Thanks,

Martin

To be honest extended warranties are a waste of good money.

The reason I say this is that under your consumer rights items purchased have to be fit for purpose, and spending say £800 or £1000 on a television anyone would expect it too last more than the 12 months of the initial warranty, and should last for many years of trouble free viewing.

Under British consumer law you have up to 6 years to claim against faulty items of value, so therefore an extended warranty is not required. Some interesting reading is the consumer direct website regarding this.

I know this to be true as one of my electrical items of large value broke down 3 months out of warranty and after having it repaired twice (free) it still wasn't satisfactory, the manufacturer eventually gave me a full refund. I know it took some fighting and but it was worth all the effort.

The bigest problem is companies in this country need to realise their obligations under consumer law to the customer. They probably do, but try to make things as difficult as possible when you are claiming. This is in the hope you will give up with your claim, don't give up and keep the pressure on them!!!! but one thing is make sure you know what you are talking about, so research the subject (ring and explain the problem to consumer direct) before you contact the company. Your initial contact should be the supplier not the manufacturer, as your claim is against them under the law.

Hope this has been of help???

i'd go for the john lewis deal, personally,i lost one samsung lcd screen within 54 weeks from new, samsung weren't interested in helping out,i paid nearly £500 in repairs.
Exactly a year later the replaced screen developed a fault,so i'm now onto my third lcd screen in 3 years, total cost over £2000 spent in the 3 year period,a lot of which had to do with me not having a warranty.
may'be i am just incredibly unlucky, but i don't expect lcds to last even 5 years even though they are supposed to.
1 year warranty on expensive items nowadays is a joke in my opinion.

A extended/third party warranty takes the hassle out of repairs after the initial manufacturer/dealer offer and while the sales of good act talks big there is enough wiggle room for it to be almost irrelevant in the real world unless you have the time and money to fight a refusal by the manufacturer over any claim.

The simple truth is that for every person that is willing to take a matter to court if required there are probably 90 that wouldn't and another 9 that would even feel uncomfortable enforcing the 1 year warranty.

John Lewis always get a mention, if the price is comparable taking a genuine fully backed 5 year deal from a retailer is perhaps the best option especially when cheap internet prices tend to limit the customers direct contact with a supplier.

Thank you all for your replies and your kind advice/help.

Whilst I wish I would be as successful as thegrimreaper in getting a repair/refund a few months out of guarantee, knowing me I somehow doubt that I would get such a good result if the worst happened. However I agree that extended warranties appear to be very expensive.

Also considering the responses from beintot and Jarrak together with the apparent unavailability of the TX32LXD700 in shops (within an hour or so of where I live) and the relatively small advantage it has over the TX32LXD70, I am currently persuing the "best of all worlds" approach of asking John Lewis (with their free 5 year guarantee) to price match Richer Sounds who sell the TX32LXD70 at £599.95

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to reply - your responses have all been very helpful.

Good luck with the price match. If you are successful please post back as my John Lewis has always excluded Richer Sounds from their "Never Knowingly Undersold" policy. One tip is to check prices in some of the smaller retailers. I usually think of them as being higher priced, but I found that a local shop had a video camera on a special offer and in stock. I was then able to get JL to price match and get an extra year warranty.

Hi JBlink!

Just to confirm that I did get JL to price match Richer Sounds and got the Panasonic TX32LXD70 TV for £599.95 with a free 5 year guarantee!

I understand that the rules for a JL price match are that the item is on display with a ticketed price and is also in stock which appear fair to me. Before attempting the price match I had to find a Richer Sounds Store that met all these criteria which took about 10-15 minutes on the phone (since my local store did not)

Hope this is useful,

Martin
