I've just come off the phone from O2 customer services (after a wait of 25 mins but that's for another thread!) and have been informed that O2 will be launching an unlimited data tariff for consumers on Fri 28th Sep for 12 gbp a month.

The operator didn't define 'unlimited' but I'm pleased that O2 will FINALLY have an unlimited offering. At last I can use my N95 as a portable internet device

O2 have achieved a new low in the definition of 'unlimited' - it's only 200mb a month and once you go past 250 you'll be charged at £3 a MB !!!

O2 will probably spin it that you're getting £600 worth of data for only £7.50 per month, so £3 per MB over the "unlimited" allowance isn't unreasonable!

Mind you, I've spent the last 6 months paying £10 a month for the 20MB Bolt On so who's the fool!

Bet they won't tell current bolt on subscribers about the new data tariffs - you'll probably have to queue for half an hour to cancel and resubscribe!

- really? Could you post a link to where you found this please? I think I might mention this when I next phone O2 (not that it will do any good but it's useful to know)

To me anyone that promotes a service as "unlimited" must hold their word i.e. no caps. Otherwise don't promote it as such.

iPhone data limits are 200 meg a day
Is that possible with EDGE?

It was mentioned at the launch by the o2 boss when quizzed about the limits. He mentioned you would have to be visiting 1400+ internet pages a day to go over the limit which equates to 200 meg which was said as well.

O2 Customer Services wouldn't allow me to add the new £7.50 data tariff as I'm billed by Carphone and O2 have apparently stopped new contracts with 3rd party billers since 19th September.

There is at least a 3 week delay in passing on new tariff changes to 3rd party billers like CPW!

Great. Looks like I'll have to deal with O2 direct if I want to renew my 18 month contract in November, to take advantage of any tariff changes.

In the meantime still got to pay £10 per month for only 20MB!

Just to say there is now a £7.50 "unlimited" pay as you go bolt-on. But still restricted to wap access only.

That's strange - I'm now on a 3 contract but I was up until recently on O2 PAYG and I had no problem using GPRS for stuff like Gmail and Opera Mini. I might check this out to see if it works...

Officially, O2 Pay as you Go has access to WAP only. If you download something like the Gmaps application, it wont connect. However, if your phone supports proxy servers it is possible to access the internet, by setting up a proxy server. i don't know whether this would be included in the data bundle though.

Most phones have an email client, on O2 PAYG you can't access ya emails using POP3, IMAP4, i don't understand why!

I have never needed any proxy servers to openly browse with GPRS on O2.

You are lucky, the official line from O2 is that there is more than enough on 'O2 Active' to make full internet access unnecessary. There are also no plans to remove this restriction. (This was as of last week in a written response, I presume they mean WAP over GPRS rather than just the O2 Active portal.)

O2 have a seperate set of Mobile Web settings to allow contract customers to access the full web, email etc. You will notice also that the APN, username and password are different for contract and PAYG customers.

If you are an i-mode customer then you can access special versions of some websites.
