Digital Camera for good photos at dusk - Canon or Sony?

I've noticed most camera reviews seem to only cover two scenarios - outside in bright sunshine or inside with the subject (inevitably) quite close. I tend to do a few city breaks in the winter to Scandinavia where the light is poor after about 2pm (or also gloomy days in Britain), and so this scenario is important to me. My current 7 year old film camera is better than friends' digital cameras (which produce photos too dark), although I have to use a tripod.

I'm considering a new compact digital 'point and shoot' type, with good stabilisation so I don't have to use a tripod as often. I'd like a viewfinder too, so that gives me a shortlist of either Canon (probably IXUS I950 IS) or Sony (W200 / W90).

Has anyone experience of these cameras at dusk?

The Canon gets mainly excellent reviews but question marks over how it performs in this scenario. My gut instinct is also that the reviews are based on a perceived good reputation rather than them being actually better than other cameras. The Sony gets fairly good reviews, none outstanding but nothing bad about it either.

Agreed.

If you want a point'n'shoot thats decent in low light they're pretty hard to beat.

Thanks - they have no viewfinder though which could help me keep the camera steady?

...although just look at some example pictures on the 'net and I think you're both right!
