3G on a phone - is it almost a necessity now?
When you buy a phone, is it important for you that it's got 3G?
3G's on quite a lot of phones now but you can still get by with a normal 2G phone. Would you say that 3G is only good if you really need it? |

I have a 3G phone and never use the 3G features... so no, it's not essential to me.

3G is important, but not quite a necessity. If all you do is make calls, send texts, the occasional MMS and look up on WAP for the lastest news once every few days, the 2G networks are fine.
3G, and especially HSDPA, come in to its element when you're looking for full or enhanced net access & VoIP among others. Its a shame that the GSM operators haven't rolled out EDGE on an extensive basis, but with so much money riding on 3G after licence acquicistions that was to be inevitable

I have a 2G phone at the moment but when I've had 3G phones in the past I haven't used the 3G features.

I browse the internet 10+ times a day via my phone, I would really have issues with dropping down to 3G (let alone 2G) from my HSPDA handset.
I appreciate that most people wouldn't think of accessing the net via their handset, but at a fiver for unlimited access, I think it's well worth it. |

As usual it depends what you want your phone for. I browse the web on my 6630 so can make use of the 3G speed (when I can get a decent 3G signal). My OH needed a new handset last month and I was really surprised how few handsets were 3G. When I spoke to the assistant at my local Orange store I was told that "most people don't want video calls". I said that I felt that the speed of access to mobile web applications was the main point of 3G only to be informed that " it isn't something we are asked about". I think that there is still a lot of education that needs to be done regarding 3G.

I gotta say, that when it comes to public demand, people in general just don't seem to list lightening fast web browsing or video calling as important when buying their new phones. What does seem important is camera quality, music-playing ability and style.
