Sony are to release an OLED TV in December 2007 - See Trusted Reviews-Sony OLED

...But, it will only be a 11" screen with a resolution of 960 x 540 (so not HD but notice relationship to 1920 x 1080 resolution). Contrast ratio claimed 1000000:1 and the panel is a mere 3mm thick.

I would find it amusing if we actually see domestic TV sized OLED's in UK stores before SED's

Tis a thing of beauty, if you have a limitless suppy of cash, and need a telly in your kitchen.

Has anyone seen an OLED in action and can comment on picture compared to plasmas and LCD, in particular motion slur?

Two or three years perhaps for the EU market, a little less for the US and Japanese markets assuming SONY can successfully scale up the technology to make mass production of 28" and above viable.

It took a long time for LCD panels and Plasma glass to be manufactured to a standard that reduce the waste to a level that allowed significant price cuts.

The kicker for OLED is of course both Plasma and LCD will continue to develop and make a profit while OLED plays catch up in the domestic market.

Which is why I asked about motion slur. If this has beaten that problem, making the screens as comfortable to watch as a CRT, then it will almost certainly help sales growth. Motion slur just grates with me. I find I'm constantly hard blinking or rubbing my eyes to remove the imaginary gunk from the corneas.

I imagine people are going to be disappointed if (or when) OLED actually hits the mainstream market?. It's just another way of displaying coloured pixels, so will use the exact same upscalers as Plasma or LCD, so will have the problems associated with upscaling just the same.

Although in a few years time there will be less problems with upscaling as processors become faster and cheaper.

Exactly.
By the time OLED is in a 32" telly for the UK market the Pio G8 Kuro electronics and glass will be in a rebadged (probably Sharp) model selling for under a grand

They certainly will, the point I was trying to make was that as the processing improves then the panel technology (coloured pixels etc) will have a bigger affect than they currently do where poor processing can wreck an otherwise decent display.

It looks like there've been some additional moves at Sony following the original announcement that they are going to develop organic light emitting diode (OLED) televisions as mentioned by the OP. Sony has been rethinking its flat screen television operations and it's now announced that it will stop making rear projection televisions in February 2008 due to falling demand.

Instead, they've now decided to concentrate on standard LCD flat screens and OLED technology following the announcement of the world's first OLED television with a screen just 3 mm thick. More info on this story can be found here at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7161623.stm and

Saw a 31inch OLED in a recent review, flat doesn't do it justice.

I just watched 'Click' on News 24, and they showed a Sony OLED 11 inch at the recent technology expo.
Apparently the image quality is stunning according to the presenter(obviously we can't see it due to our current TV screens). It removes the current problem of fast images being blurry on plasmas.

If Sony are moving forward with this then it appears that they intend to make OLED for consumers sooner rather than later.
I saw some posts saying that it will be about 20 years before this technology is available to the consumer,..but if Sony are pushing it forward now and showing it to consumers then it looks like they intend to release these TVs a lot sooner than that.

Funny you should say that!.

We had a lady come in the shop the other day, complaining that she had seen an advert on the TV for a television, and it was a far better picture than the set she had bought from us - that she was watching the other set on!

Samsung indicate 2010 could be the target for mass market consumption, they only have to scale the technology up and reduce the wastage in production to bring the price down and the same will apply to SONY for their OLED screens.

Of course while both companies are making profits with LCD there is less incentive to bring OLED to the mass market, they could artificially delay perhaps only offering high margin panels for one sector of the market.
