I've just moved into university halls and had to start watching everything with headphones, and was wondering the squeally hiss on the letter S that frequents; is there any way to get rid of this?

It's called sibilence (or sibilance), it occurs partially at the microphone (which is why you see a filter in front in a recording studio), and partially at the loudspeaker. You can probably reduce it by turning the treble down, but it's doubtful you can get rid of it.

Not too sure if it applies to the world of CDs & downloads, but you could get bad 'pressings' of LPs on which there would be cases of sibilance.

More info' here.
