Let the rampant speculation begin.

The report says

Quote:
“However Tranter pointedly refused to rule out the possibility of a film version of Doctor Who, the department's most successful drama series of recent years.

"I would not rule out a film version of Doctor Who, no," she said.”

So she is NOT considering a new Who movie at all, just that it is not ruled out (and there is a BIG difference between those two statements).

Theres been millions of stories saying there will be a doctor who movie, some suggesting it starring David Tennant finding Rose Tyler again. another was a new movie with Paul MgGann as The Doctor again, another idea was a film about the time war.

COME UP WITH AN IDEA AND MAKE IT!! AND IF YOU ARENT GONNA MAKE A MOVIE, THEN JUST STOP MAKING THESE SPECULATIONS!!!!!!

Sorry, anger the best of me, i need happy thoughts

Catherine Tate, Catherine Tate, Catherine Tate, Catherine Tate......thats better.

In truth, the only speculation is from the person who wrote the Guardian headline (a headline dosed with a liberal sprinkling of artistic licence). The BBC is NOT considering making one (as the article goes on to say).

The X-Files managed a successful film between-seasons, so Doctor Who could too.

Considering BBC Films continually blocked the BBC Drama department from making a new TV series for several years I really wouldn't be in any hurry for them to be getting involved in the franchise again.

If they did a proper film I would like Eccleston and Billie to return for it. Not that it would happen.

It says in the season 2 dvd notes that RTD works on dr who (from memory) something like 12 hours a day every day for 11 months a year and production of DW and torchwood ground to a halt for a week because he was ill and every major decision has to be approved by him. I'm not sure any ex producer (not just RTD) could/would want to do a film as well.

Edit: and x files was american, clearly, where 18 hour days on tv shows are the norm, and they are not here.

this film rumour has been around for years now and quite honestly while the new series is still going strong I can't see the BBC wanting to make a film.

Well I don't think the 'bring back McGann' people are gonna pipe down anytime soon, and therefore neither will the rumour.

The most interesting thing in the article is that the reporter seems pretty convinced DT will be staying on for Series 5.

He goes even further in his blog

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/organgri...e_tranter.html

Quote:
“Well, it might be an idea to know who will be in it and writing it. The Beeb first has to sort out once and for all whether David Tennant will return for series five once he's finished playing Hamlet on the RSC stage.

Here's hoping the indecision of the Danish Prince, or indeed a taste for live performing, won't rub off on him too much. He's brilliant. The good news is that I got the distinct impression from speaking to Tranter yesterday that he will come back. Other BBC sources have suggested this to me as well.”

Well the thing is if they did a film now, the chances are David Tennant might not do it as he's already committed to doing another year or two of Doctor Who stuff and this would mean staying on for even longer. So if he left, would it be a good idea to introduce a new Doctor in a film? Personally I think a film would be a bigger hit if it featured an already-established Doctor.

I'd love a big screen DW project, with a great storyline and some familiar faces doing cameos.

not sure Tranter actualy confirmed Tennent , would be coming back for series 5, but I did get the feeling that the years break was sweatner by the BBC to get him to return,.

The idea of a film version of the current TV series sounds awful- A screenplay by Russell T. Davies, some bloke who makes a living directing episodes of Casualty and The Bill, special effects that wouldn't be that special on the big screen, etc.

If they're going to do a big screen version of Doctor Who, the BBC should hand it over to proper film makers. I'd love to see a film version directed by Terry Gilliam, not a TV movie by people who can't even do much with a christmas special.

Also a film that encapsulates the entire Who series rather than a version of the current series would be less likely to alienate general moviegoers. Perhaps the whole movie idea should be left to when theres no more series.

P.S. Surely David Tennent will be coming back for a fifth series, otherwise they would just get someone else rather than just doing three specials. Unless its a budget thing, rather than an availability thing.

I'm very unsure as to what benefit if any at all we would get from a big screen Doctor Who.

The budget would have to be considerable, which means the Beeb would either have to go into partnership with a big studio or, more likely sign the rights over to a big studio.
If you tried to do it on the cheap it would be naff.
The franchise from the Beeb point-of-view is pretty healthy now and making money hand over fist.
If they handed it over to a big studio then the studio would probably want casting and script approval. People have complained about the tv movie but at least the Beeb had some input into it's making. With a big studio in charge I doubt they'd get much if any. Who knows what sort of hideous travesty we would end up with then?!!
Then you have to appeal to a large enough market share to get the studio's money back, preferably several times over.
I can see it now:

Tom Cruise IS Doc Who!
co-starring Alan Rickman as Davros
Watch out Daleks this time it's personal.

Rather a old fashioned view of Hollywood. I have more faith in a big studio making a decent movie than the BBC.

also any big studio would want a bif percentage cut of the merchandise sales and I can't see the BBC being to happy about that.

Latest rumours suggest Billie Piper and Tennant appearing in the movie written by RTD. That combination sends a chill up my spine - in a bad way.

Yes, it's also from "insiders" speaking to the Daily Star, home of the ever-so-accurate "exclusives".

so will this be a story/adventure prior to Rose ending up on alt Earth or will we end up with the usual contrived nonsensical boll**ks that RTD conjures up in some of his scripts?

I wasn't a huge fan of the beach scene as I felt we were being fed the emotion rather than allowing the viewer to feel it but I do understand how it touched many. To undo that so soon would disempower what he did in that script but when has that stopped him.

Or will we end up with no film at all, because the BBC is not considering it at all, they have merely not ruled it out

There was a picture of him holding a 'vote saxon' sign in DW magazine a few issues back. It scared me quite a bit.
