Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I can do any of the following as I have phoned Sony and nobody seems to know anything about this feature beleive it or not.

1) Can I transfer Divx file from a CD/DVD to hard drive and play from the hard drive

2) Can I transfer from USB pen to Hard Drive and Play from Hard Drive

3) Can I transfer MP3 from any of the above to hard drive and play from hard drive as Sony say NO music can be put on the hard drive.

Hope someone can help

I have an 870 which is the same apart from the hard drive capacity, the answers to your questions are as follows:

1) No you can only play a DIVX file from a CD/DVD, you cannot copy them to the hard drive.

2) No you cannot play or transfer a DIVX file from a USB pen.

3) Yes you can transfer MP3's from a USB pen and from CD/DVD to the hard drive, this feature is called Music Jukebox.

thanks for the info, would you recommend the machine from what you know and can you back up dvds to hard drive to watch at a later date ?

I've had it just over a month and am generally pleased with it. I have had a few issues with timer recordings that are set to track the EPG and also series link not recording correctly, but from what I've read on here that could be more to do with the broadcaster. These issues have always been with Channel 4 programmes.

You can copy from DVD to HDD but not copy protected commercial DVD's, you also cannot copy DVD's that are finalised that were recorded in Video mode, although you can copy those recorded in VR mode.

I never record directly to a DVD, I always record to the Hard Drive and copy to a DVD if I want to keep it. This method also allows editing of adverts and the bit before and after a programme before copying to the DVD.

thanks again for all the info, I have been looking for a manual for over a week without any luck.
I currently have a 3 year old jvc hm-hds4 hdd/vhs which has been up until the hdd failed two weeks ago the best thing I have bought, we use it all the time and whatever I buy must have some important features that I am used to, like fast playback at 1.5 speed with sound and live memory which I can rewind and then tape.
1 last question though, if you set to record a freeview channel such as film 4 on channel 29, will it record a signal or will the tv have to be on, because I have a panasonic tv with idtv and if I set to record when the tv is in standby mode I get a blue screen.

The TV doesn't need to be on, the Sony has its own Freeview tuner which is what it records from. This also allows you to watch a different channel on your TV to the one you are recording.

You mention two features you would like, fast playback which the Sony has, but it doesn't have a live memory that you can rewind to record.

One great feature that I do use often is the ability to start watching a recording before it has finished.

I have finally bought a Rdr-Hxd970 and have set the machine up and so far very inpressed with all the features, however I am getting confused as to the Guide Plus section which I can't seem to get any channel info and when setting up the options were to say what brand of Freeview machine I had and what host channel number ?
I do have intergrated DTV on my tv but I thought that it would use the integrated DTV on the recorder.
Also in the user guide it says that Guide Plus is for analogue only but in the graphic in the manual it shows channels such as BBC3 and other DTV channels.
What do you think I am doing wrong ?
I am using the standard EPG Digital Guide but would Guide Plus be better ?

I wouldn't have thought so?, if you can get FreeView why would you want the lower quality analogue transmissions?, all of which are available on FreeView. GuidePlus is really only for people who can't get FreeView.

Then the only disapointing thing so far would be that when pressing the guide button and using the standard epg screen the sound and picture goes off and with Guide Plus you get a small square which shows you what you were watching before you pressed the guide button.
Also I have noticed that if you find a program using the EPG that you would like to watch, you have to come out of the epg and then change channels, is there a way of pressing something so that gives you a reminder or that switches channels for the program that is selected because when I press select or enter, it thinks I want to set a timer recording.

I had the same issue,with Channel 4 recordings,as well with the Sony RDR-HX725 and RDR-HXD 780.
Re-read the manuals of both,both which state:

(page 74 of the RDR-HXD 780 manual)
I would suggest turning off the VPS/PDC scan.
Since turning it off,I've had no further problems,with any recordings from Channel 4.
I was missing anything up to an hour, from recordings.
