All

Sorry as I'm sure this comes up all the time.

I would like to replace my 5yr old samsung crt 28" widescreen tv with a flat panel as it's a bit small for my new living room.

I think you will need to know the following;
I watch freeview (via daewoo pvr) so no cable/sky high-def etc and no plans for it
I watch lots of DVD movies, via a samsung up-scaling dvd player
Viewing distance will be around 8-9ft
Budget, well I hope to sort this for £600-800
I don't watch sport (only tour de france in the summer!)
No PS3 or Xbox

I don't think I need the latest 1080P standard, unless you tell me otherwise

I am considering a Samsung lcd 37 0r 40", costing (dixons) £580-680 from memory.

I'm not sure on the 'right' screen size having regard to the above variables or if lcd is okay for my intended use.

Any pointers would be appreciated

Regards

David

Considering your viewing distance (6') and the fact you don't want HD I wouldn't recommend anything larger than a 32". As a comparison a 32" LCD will be about 50% larger than your 28" CRT, a 37" will be twice as large as your CRT. Try sitting 5' and 4' from your CRT to see how the LCD would look in size terms for 32" and 37" respectively.

Thanks, but I sit 8-9 feet back (not 6' or was that a typo?), I will check tonight but I suspect it's nearer 9ft, I measured it a month or so back

No it wasn't a typo, I just need new glasses. Assuming it's 9' then sit 6' away to get a size comparison with 37".

If you go for 37" I can recommend the Panasonic 37PX70 plasma, that will give excellent SD performance. Since it's for SD I wouldn't bother with 1080p, the picture may well end up worse (probably upscaling using your DVD will result in a worse picture as well though it's best to try that for yourself).

Thanks

Just checked it's 10 feet / 3 metres from front of my tv to the middle of my sofa as currently positioned.

Panasonic, yes I like the look of the one you suggest

Should I be going for plasma rather than LCD for SD tv then.........is 37" the size to go for in either screen type, from your comment it would seem so i.e. 40-42" will be too large

Thanks

Plasma would be my recommendation, imho it gives better SD performance than LCD though others on here may disagree. If possible have a look for yourself.

As to the distance I have the 50" 50PX70 at 15' which gives a slightly smaller relative size than 37" would for you and I wouldn't want to go any bigger for SD (I sit closer for HD)

That's great thanks.

I think 37" sounds good, I will have a look this weekend

Pano's seem to have a good product line up
