LCD's for sports
A question I have, how important is it to have 100Hz for LCDs if your watching sports? Whats the quality like if it doesn't have it?

lcd for sports
lcd tvs are not that great for sports as it suffers from motion blur ie fast moving images although they are improving a 100mz tv will not make any difference infact it will probably be worse.
I used to sell lcds and plasma for a living i have just won a lcd tv in my new job a 32 inch not a well known make a german Hanspree something to do with panasonic. i was made up to win it took it home set it up, i was really disapointed with the picture. i have a tv drive so i got my self an HDMI Lead, plugged it in adjusted the settings ie 720 wide going through Hdmi etc and oh my god the picture is superb i cant believe it, Hd is fantastic on this tv, and even better my standard sd tv has also improved, even sd football looks good, so if u get an Lcd tv get a tv drive with an Hdmi lead or Sky hd box etc then you will benefit from a decent pic.as it upscales sd as well. its funny really cos i used to sell sony, pana, tosh, phillips all the big names, i can honestly say my pic on my lcd is as good as them, and you can pick my tv up for about £400 weird. ![]()

exscuse me
I think i know what iam talking about mate i saw Lcds and plasma in action for over 2 years 8 hours a day! I have seen all the top models run through Hd and standard tv, and iam telling you my tv is not a million miles away from the latest 70 series Pana, and the new samsung, I have nothing to gain whats so ever in lying about the pic quallity, i now work for a well know bank in fraud so why would i lie about what i see? I do know my tvs believe me! IAM NOT SAYING MY TV IS A MUCH BETTER PICTURE THAN ALL THE TOP MODELS, BUT WHAT IAM SAYING THE PIC ON MY TV THROUGH HD IS AS GOOD AS I HAVE SEEN. AND BELIEVE ME I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF TVS GOING THROUGH HD. So please do not question my integrity here as my family and friends have said the same infact my brother in law spent over 1000 on his and his tv pic is no better than my one even he admits painfully, by the way my eye sight is good to ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So what are you getting excited about?, and where did I attack your integrity or eye sight?. |

I've got an LCD and from a distance of about 6-7 feet, the picture is great for football (SD), even on Setanta which has a relatively low bitrate.

I would agree with this in itself but would also add that sport often looks bad on cheap LCDs even in HD be cause of the slow response times.

In my experience, smearing is not a problem on recent good quality LCDs. Certainly, I've not experienced that with my 10 month old Sony Bravia.

Hi,
I am considering buying an lcd tv. What is a "tv drive" ? I was considering buying a Hanspree, but your statement about it not being very good until fitting a tv drive have worried me about it. Thanks. I have a crt tv at the moment and I am very happy with it but wonder what disadvantages there will be to having an lcd. I am not into HD or anything like that, I just want to watch freeview and the odd dvd with a good picture and sound quality, Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Soundssupreme |

A TV Drive is what the Virgin V+ box used to be known as. It's an external box like a Sky box offering pay TV.
I dont have one (I have Sky HD) but I assume, as it has an HDMI output, that it can send out HD pictures hence the OP getting much better pictures when he connected his V+ via HDMI rather than the scart connection he was probably using previously. Unfortunately, there is little HD content on any other platform than Sky HD although SD TV on my Panny looks great when upscaled by my HD box. Rgds, Scorp |

We took delivery of the Hannspree 32" yesterday (connected with Scart to standard Sky digibox - Amstrad I think) and while the picture colour and brightness are great, the motion blur is really annoying.
I was interested in pokerjoe's comments on using HDMI links, but this does not seem possible with the Sky/Amstrad digibox. Can anyone recommend a workaround? Thanks, Jasper |

As a slightly more helpful response, I actually have a 40" Sony U3000 LCD and sport looks great on it. HD football on Sky is stunning. No motion blur or smearing as far as I can tell .... |

Even a U series Sony isn't 'cheap'
, and as you say they are still damn good pictures, I've been very impressed with the ones I've taken out lately.A lot of the smearing is down to the generation of the panel, the top makes are using the latest generation of panels, and the cheap makes are usually a couple of generations behind. |

![]() Although, I think I did get a pretty good deal on it. Cost me £660. The cheapest 40" LCD I can see on pricerunner is a Samsung at £584. It's the only one on there under £600 and I imagine there would still be delivery to pay on that. Cheapest on there for the U3000 is £684 .....

I have a crappy 2-3year old philips plasma. My girlfriend went to her uncles who has a 40x2000 sony. When she got back she asked why the picture was all blocky & jumpy when people moved on his and not ours when his is more expensive and newer.
That has convinced me that plasma it the way to go! |

Plasma rules, pictures are smoother clearer all round better.
I wonder where the guy that sells tv's use to work, I bet it was comet or currys, they are hardly the place to go and be able to tell the difference, they set them up badly if at all, and never have anything worthy of showing off a good hd display. My advice is go and test them for yourself, some poeple will prefer the high brightness of an LCD, others will prefer the cleaness of the plasma picture. |
