Samsung PS50Q96HD Plasma

I popped into Currys after work and saw this TV, an LG50PC56 and the Panasonic 50PX70

I was always after the Panasonic 50PZ700, but was put off by reviews, also I have spent some of my savings already, so I was thinking about either the LG or the Samsung as a slightly cheaper option. The Samsung seems better from what I read, and also on the Dixons website with a stand and free delivery, it works out cheaper than buying the set on it's own at Currys

My question is, is this Samsung worth considering, and if so will Currys.Digital price match it or is it available elsewhere on line cheaper?

I couldn't work out when this model came out as the What Home Cinema website only mentions the 97 model, and from the Dixons website, it says this is an exclusive version of that model, but not in what respects

The connections seem good and I presume it is 1080i and provides a decent freeview, Sky and upscaled DVD picture

Currys Dixons PC World all the same company. To get the Currys shop to price match Dixons is a waste of time as they will have to order it and ship it from the same place! This TV has many good reviews and if it falls in your price bracket then all the better.
The 96/97 thing is I think a bezel difference and the tech spec is identical.

I only mentioned the price match so that I could get it a bit quicker, but after looking on AV Forums, I can't price match anyway as they have different codes, hence the 96 and 97

As ever with AV Forums, it will take me about two days to read all the posts on the thread

I found this one, the PS50Q97HDX. Does anyone know what differences there are on this one?

Ignore me on this one, have just checked and they are basically the same model

What does concern me though looking at the specs, are the lack of fastext, the lack of an on screen display and the lack of auto install, according to the Dixons website

I have decided to opt for this TV from Dixons, and it will be with me on Thursday. I am on holiday next week so I will have to wait a couple of days to use it. I would have it bought it from RGB Direct, but the standard delivery is 2 weeks, and to get it as quickly as I am for free at the moment, would cost me £80. Plus I don't know how good they are, and Dixons is a well known name

I was deciding whether to opt for the full HD, but seeing as it was £400 extra, I gave it a miss. I have the money, I just don't want to spend that much at this time, also I have got the 50" screen I was after, and it will just fit perfectly for where I want to put it

From what I've read, for how I'm going to use it, 1080p wouldn't be noticeably better

I have returned from holiday, carried this TV up two flights of stairs and have to admit I am very happy with it

PLUSES
Nice new big screen - it looks fantastic
Removes the need for a separate PC monitor
Films and games look better
Built in freeview
Digital out socket (which according to the Home Cinema magazine website was not on this)

NEGATIVES
Supposed to be a CI slot, but apart from a sticker, there is no slot there
Connected my WII by component and works fine. Try to connect my JVC TH-S66 Home Cinema DVD system and set it to progressive, and it shows no signal on the component screen. Why???

I still have the stand to set up, but I am too knackered at the moment

Are you sure?, it's an EU regulation it has to have one.

I have rubbed my finger over where the sticker is and there is no slot. I have re-checked the manual and it does mention one

I don't need it as I have Sky, but it would be nice to know it was there, especially when it is meant to be there

There may be a plastic cover that has to be removed, this could be covering the slot?.

There is a big sticker on the back, but it definitely does not cover a CI slot

i have the 42q96 version of the panel you ave just bought, and if its in the same place as mine, you should find the ci slot on the (rear) left as you look at the front of the panel

There is the sticker and above that halfway up on the back there is the vents, and there is what looks like a slot there, where something may slot in vertically. This is above the aerial socket slightly level with the rear left screw

The instruction manual isn't too clear and I don't want to have to swap the TV, as I have been very lucky and do not have any dead pixels, which to be fair, I am quite amazed with

it should slot in horizontally - if you like i can post a link to a picture of the rear of mine so you can see what your looking for?

Thanks, and I will see if I can get a picture of mine up, once I know what it's supposed to look like

a slot - slightly bigger than a credit card and about 5 times the thickness.

It's there, don't worry.

sorry about the low quality image. the only camera i could find was the one on my mobile. As i said earlier, you should find it on the left side (if looking at the front) it should be a horizontal slot with a couple of plastic 'tabs'

That's fine, it is the slot I thought it might be

I was expecting it to be elsewhere because of the sticker and not very clear instructions, but at least my mind has been put to rest

Thanks bluechang and also iDan
