Pioneer PDP 428XD DTV picture
I have just set up my new Pioneer plasma tv and the picture is great when looking at Sky channels.
However, when I look at DTV channels, the picture is compressed in the middle. This is particularly obvious if a person moves accross the screen. When they reach the middle, they become thin. I have tried to find the setting on the tv that fixes this but have not found anything obvious. If anyone can help, I would be grateful. Cheers Mark |

It sounds like it's set to 'smart mode' (that's what Sony call it - should be called 'stupid mode' though). It's where a 4:3 programme is stretched to fill the screen, but the outsides are stretched more than the centre, because you mostly watch the centre.
Try pressing your screen format button and see what it's set to?. |

I would also check that your Sky (Freeview?) box is set to output 16:9, the number of friends I've visited who have their boxes set to 4:3 and their TVs to 16:9 (or in your case "stupid" mode) is unreal.
Your TV should be set to 4:3 or auto (something like that I don't know Pioneers) so that it will switch between 4:3 and 16:9 automatically. Try switching between Sky News and Sky Sports (not adverts), the picture should switch and be distortion free. It may be in the manual under "aspect ratio". |
