Carphone Warehouse Free Gifts

Has anyone taken out one of the contract phones that come with free gifts from CPW ?

I am looking at possibly a phone with a free Wii and want to know if these deals are as they say (what are they like for delivering the gift on time, etc) or if they are just a gimmick and you end up having to fight to get it.

Thanks

My advice would be only do a deal if it really is gift WITH purchase, ie you actually walk away with it.

you also have to look at the cost of the contract. i.e is the cost of the so called free gift included in the cost of the contract. it might actually be cheaper to buy the contract and then purchase the gift they are'giving away'

I'm not sure people do that. For example, later this month Orange will be giving away portable DVD players with new contracts. The cost of the tariffs won't go up to pay for the players though.

Actually, they do. It's quite well known too.

They've stopped doing it via Carphone Warehouse and more recently their e2save.com site, but their onestopphoneshop.com site still does it;

Here are is the tariff page for the Nokia 6288 on Mix & Match 300. No Charge for the handset. (Nor on any other Tariff)

Here is the same handset, same tariff but with the 'Free' XBox 360. Note how the handset, which was previously free, now has a £154.99 charge applied.

And here it is again, Mix & Match 300, with the 'Free' Playstation 3 applied. £329.99 for the handset?!?

So, while it appears to be dying out, it certainly still happens.

And just for Comedy Value, here's a Sim Only Virgin deal.
Similar tariff to above, with a free Nintendo Wii. You just have to pay £149.99 for the SIM!

Its madness to take a deal on the basis of a freebie, the gift has to be paid for somehow. You can always shop around and find the contract cheaper, without the gift.

yes, like i said in the free ps3 thread i got a free pressie about a year ago.

I got a free d900, free xbox 360, £60 a month, for 12 months on O2. (600 mins and 100 texts, but i changed the tarif to a £40 6 months later). It was from onestopphoneshop.co.uk and the deal paperwork and stuff came thru CPW.

The phone arrived within 2 days. it was ordered about 15th dec and i got it about 28 days later. No probs at all. Go for it.

Also, a lot of the free gifts they give away are with clearance phones. I imagine they are the phones they have in stock that they have paid for from the manufacturers but cant get rid of so they bundle them with an attractive deal?

You didn't really get a free Xbox, because you paid way over the odds for the monthly line rental, you just bought it in monthly installments and got a clearance phone.

ok, whatever. i got a phone which i needed, i got a 360 which i wanted and i use the minutes and texts. so really i havnt lucked out after all.

I could have just got the tarif and phone and not bothered with the free gift. does it matter which way round i decided to pay for things? I was just answering th op by saying that you do get the console and the phone.

Thanks all, the deal they are offering is for the same price / same minutes / same texts as I am currently on, so as far as I am concerned, it would be free, I am aware they are clearance phones, but I am not bothered about that as I would just use my current K800i anyway.

Just wanted to see if they sent these gifts out without a big fuss, with the way customer service is in the UK, I can't be bothered to order this and then have to fight to get it lol

Regards
