Home Cinema Set-up help.
We purchased the currys offer of the LG50 with Stand and Home Cinema system, Only problem is the home cinema system did not come with any connectivity to the tv! So we are using scart at the moment.
If i am correct, If i buy a HDMI cable and connect it up that way, i will be able to use the tv remote to also operate the dvd player? (it has the options on) and i would get a better quality picture. The other thing that has annoyed me is there is nothing to connect the tv sound to the dvd player, So the surround cannot be used until i watch a dvd! It does have a audio in and some other input options on screen and from what i have looked at on the back it has the red and white phono sockets. but the back of the tv doesnt have the output for anything like that, Everything is just input. How could i get the sound from my tv? Would the HDMI also solve this problem? Thanks. |

Without knowing which "Home Cinema" audio system was supplied it is difficult to comment.
But, generally, you connect the video outputs of your DVD, Set top box, etc. either directly to the TV, or into a video switching Home Cinema amp or receiver. You connect the audio (using the Optical or Coax outputs) to the amp or receiver independantly, if the audio system doesn't also offer video switching. Yes, a HDMI direct connection to the TV or a SCART chain of devices would work, and audio is carried within the SCART & HDMI cables, but it is analogue. The manuals given to you with the equipment should show various setup options and are probably easier to read than a forum because of the illustrations, etc. Of course, if you need any help with the terms used in the manual then ask away. I rarely use the speakers built into the TV set, as they're generally pretty naff when compared to even a medium budget audio system. Some Home Cinema amps & receivers allow you to connect HDMI cables, which will switch both digital audio and video simultaneously, and is obviously the preferred solution. You can then connect the HDMI out socket on the HC amp/receiver to the TV. |

Sorry about the lack of information.
Right I will try and explain again (see if it any different to what i said first! )I purchased this.. http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/159555 Now it comes with the Tv and Dvd Home Cinema system. When i unpacked the tv and Cinema System there was no connectivity cables to the Tv so i just used an old Scart Cable i found. All set up okay, Reading the Manuals for both the Tv and Dvd Cinema it should be able to control the Dvd player with the Tv remote and what ever else it does via something called Simplink? I understand for this you need a HDMI cable which i am going to purchase online tonight anyway. I would have thought that because this package all comes in one (both LG) that you would be able to listen to the tv through the surround. But this is no at the minute. On the back there is no Phono Out connectors on the Tv to connect to the phono nn on the Dvd Cinema. The way i have it set up at the moment is the phono leads from my Sky box to the Dvd Cinema and selecting Aux. There must be a better way than this. In the Menu's of the tv there is options to turn the audio off on the tv. So i would expect thats what you would do when you have it set up for surround system. Would the HDMI cable i am getting help in anyway with this problem? Also i suppose in which ever way i get this to work i am still going to have to use the Dvd Cinema remote to control the volume as i use the Sky remote programmed into to the Tv to control the volume. Sorry for the long and complicated post, I would try and get the Model Number for the Dvd player but its somewhere in a room where all the stuff has been dumped while the room is getting decorated

There is no phono output on the tv set at all, Only input for a seperate AV.
At the moment i am using the phono leads from the Sky+ box to the Dvd Cinema. |

HDMI is uni directional for Audio and Video. So you could use it to get picture and sound FROM your DVD TO the TV but not the other way round.
SCART is bi directional however so you should be able to get sound out of the TV that way. Most TV's can be set-up to feed video and audio out of at least one SCART. So maybe you could use a SCART to phono adapter plug or lead to get a feed to the AUX in on the surround system. If the surround system has digital inputs then use one of those to connect to the Sky+ box instead of the phono lead you are using currently. You will only get true surround sound out of the Sky box via digital anyway. You can also get converter boxes to go between the optical out of the Sky box and a coaxial input on the surround sytem if necessary - Maplin amongst others do them. |
