The Doctor's companions........

Ok, I have (albeit rather sad) put my memory to the test to see if I could remember all the companions the Doctor has ever had, this is just companions as seen on screen and not the ones that also popped in in books (such as Bernice Summerfield) - here is my finalised list:-

Susan Foreman
Ian Chesterton
Barbara Wright
Vicki
Sreven Taylor
Katerina
Sara Kingdom
Dodo Chaplet
Ben Jackson
Polly
Jamie MacCrimmon
Victoria Waterfield
Zoe Herriot
Liz Shaw
Jo Grant
Sarah Jane Smith
Harry Sullivan
Leela
K9 mark I
Romana
K9 mark II
Adric
Tegan Jovanka
Nyssa
Turlough
Chamelion
Peri Brown
Mel
Ace
Rose
Adam
Captain Jack
Mickey Smith
Martha Jones
Donna Noble

Any you think I have missed out, or shouldn't be there?

I once heard that a companion is only classed as a companion if they have featured in more than one story (So travelled in the Tardis between said stories) or have been seen to have been travelling with the Doctor for some time (Sara Kingdom in The Dalek Master plan) - hence why I have not included Grace from the movie or any of the UNIT lot.

Nope that's the list, though nyssa was onscreen before tegan, and usually people count there as being 2 romanas.

The UNIT gang should definitely be included, especially the Brigadier. Leaving him out is a scandal! There aren't really any exact criteria which you can use to say whether someone is officially a companion or not, but if you want to go with the "has travelled in the TARDIS" angle then both the Brig and Benton were in the TARDIS when it was taken to Omega's world in 'The Three Doctors', and the Brig was also whisked away to Gallifrey in 'The Five Doctors' and returned via TARDIS, so that must count for something.

I'd include Grace too. It may have been only one story but she certainly fulfills the companion role for the duration. And personally I don't count Adam, I see him as a potential companion who ballsed up his audition and got dumped back home straight away. There are guest characters in other stories who took trips in the TARDIS and generally spent longer in the Doctor's company than Adam did, which must have been only a few hours in real-time.

And do we count Jackie? Appeared in multiple episodes and finally travelled in the TARDIS in 'Army Of Ghosts'!

Sara Kingdom has far less right than Jackie to be fair... she only appeared within one story whereas Jackie had that trip in Army of Ghosts.

Also, the travelled in the TARDIS criteria stuffs up Liz Shaw doesn't it - certainly a companion but didn't travel in the TARDIS...

Personally, I agree the UNIT family were companions... Brig, Benton, Mike Yates are as deserving as any.

Btw.. it's Kamelion, not Chamelion. And Katrina, not Katerina. And McCrimmon, not MacCrimmon. And technically, Vislor Turlough... though we only found that out in his final story.

Wasn't Liz the companion when the Doctor couldn't use the TARDIS after War Games though? Not her fault (or his) she didn't travel in it.

True. If we were to base companion status purely on having travelled in the TARDIS, then Liz Shaw would not be a companion

As long as her name is mentioned anywhere I am happy.

I disagree, in the middle of the Dalek master plan story there was a six month gap, in which time Sara Kingdom was traveling in the TARDIS with the Doctor and Steven, Jackie has but one trip in one episode

I suppose that is a valid point.....

I really didn't think this was going to turn into a petty squabble about spelling mistakes!! But you are right about 'Kamelion' but you are wrong about 'Katrina' it was 'Katarina' seems I put an 'e' where the 'a' should have been - mind you, getting a letter wrong with McCrimmon seemed to get me into trouble!!
