New to 5.1
Hi folks, I'm no expert when it comes to surround sound systems.
Nevertheless, I have just ordered a Philips 3357 DVD Home Theatre System, and would greatly appreciate anyone's recommendations on connecting this to my existing set-up, to achieve the best overall sound, and more importantly getting sound through all the speakers for all aspects of the set-up. I already have a Philips 37PF9631D LCD TV connected on HDMI 1 to a Sky HD box and on HDMI 2 to a PS3. I understand that the 3357 has HDMI connection, as well as scart and component, and although it doesn't have optical connections, it can support digital coax in. As I say, anyone's ideas would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. |

I need to cancel the order if I've made a mistake!

![]() The only problem I can see is that with only one digital input, you would have to disconnect one device to use the other, (unless the TV itself has a optical output). -Chris |

It has a digital coaxial input, the PS3 and SKY HD both have digital optical outputs, so you would need a optical to coaxial adapter, (such as this one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...29293&doy=7m10). Which would work fine.

Just to clarify, if i get the adapter you mention, I assume I'll need an optical cable and a digital coax cable. |

Thanks for the reply. This is the spec for my TV;
w.p4c.philips.com/files/3/37pf9631d_10/37pf9631d_10_pss_eng.pdf I don't think it has optical out, so disconnecting one at a time seems the only way. All you need to do is connect your 5.1 system to the TV by coaxial, disable the TVs internal speakers (either turn them right down or look for internal mute option in settings), and it will pass through the TVs audio on whatever you are watching (SKY HD or PS3) to the 5.1 system. The only cable you need is a coaxial phono lead. -Chris |

Sorry, this link should work for the tv spec. I've just noticed that it has an S/PDIF Digtal audio out socket. Would this link directly to the Digital Coax-In socket on the 3357, eliminating the need for the optical cables and converter, and thus creatng surround sound on any source played through the TV? |

Oh. You wont need the optical to coaxial adapter, under connectivity on page 2, "S/PDIF out (coaxial)".
All you need to do is connect your 5.1 system to the TV by coaxial, disable the TVs internal speakers (either turn them right down or look for internal mute option in settings), and it will pass through the TVs audio on whatever you are watching (SKY HD or PS3) to the 5.1 system.
