I am considering buying the Philips 32PFL9632D/10 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/cons...+32PFL9632D-10) , which is currently available for £999 from House of Fraser with a 5 year warranty. It is a 32" screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768p and includes a built-in Freeview tuner as well as Ambilight technology.

I am new to HD TV and would therefore appreciate any feedback on this particular model, particularly when it is fed with a non-HD signal (I currently subscribe to Virgin Media and notice HD content is limited to a few on-demand films and the BBC HD service). Are there any specific problems with Philips screens that I should be aware of? Which other manufacturers should I be considering? Quality and aesthetics are more important than cost.

In addition, does anyone have experience of Ambilight technology? Does it improve the overall experience or is it just a gimmick? I may not mount the TV on the wall so does this have any effect when the screen is standing in the corner of a room?

Many thanks to everyone in advance,
Mark.

I fidn it quite strange that retailers are still stocking Philips products considering the number of customers who have to take them.

Or perhaps the problem is not as great as some people would make out...

I've had zero problems with the older 32PF9986 and the Ambilight is surprising interesting although it bumps up the price.
The performance of the panel has exceeded expectations and even now nearly 3 years on I still have no problems watching the majority of SD channels on it. That said low bitrate/low res channels are the bane of the panel but that can be said for nearly every HD resolution large flat panel made for the domestic TV market.

The notion that Philips products are poor designs, low performance, low build quality and unreliable has got totally out of hand but understandable, if you have a bad product from one manufacturer you are unlikely to buy from them again and pass that message on every chance you get

Huge thread over a AVF about the 32PFL9632D/10.

Do some more reading while over there, plenty of alternatives both in make/price for that screen size.

Much of the TV trade won't sell or repair Philips, it's probably the most hated manufacturer there is!

There are a small number of dealers though who seem to love it, and are presumably Philips service agents.

Probably most Philips is sold by the multi-nationals though, and the buying is done by people who have no idea what is or isn't reliable, just buying on price (and probably free trips and perks!).

And SD performance!
