I am currently about to replace an old DVD player and I am looking to purchase a Sony DVP-S535 or 536 (I have not decided on colour). To go with my new DVD player I am looking to get a small surround sound system. I am interested in the HTK-215 as it seems to be getting some good reviews and reading postings on this forum looks the best by a long way.

What I am not sure about is does the HTK-215 have an amp built in. If so can I plug either the 5.1 out or the optical out into the htk-215 or do I need to buy a seperate amp ?

If you can plug the dvp-s535 into the htk-215 which is the best type of cable to do it with optical or the 5.1 suround outs ?

Many thanks

Chris

I have a Sony htk-215 and an LG 3350e. DD and DTS sound is unbelievable - although the dialogue is a little quiet - liveable.

Big problem - hum when using phono leads to connect TV to amp - am looking into it

I would just hook it up to your dvd player by the optical cable and make the amp do all the processing. The amp will be better, I think, than the inbuilt dolby digital decoder. The amp has both a dolby digital and a dts decoder so it will handle the signals from your dvd player.

As far as I understand it, if your dvd player has the 5.1 surround jacks and a decoder you can also connect it to the amp this way but then you are just using the amp to channel the sounds to the speakers (it won't be doing any processing). This amp has a lot of special effects such as cinema sounds which also incorporate sound effects used in the cinema. It makes sense to use the amp to the processing - it is its job and it does it beautifully.

I have just purchased the Sony 336 dvd player (without the inbuilt dolby digital decoder) and it works beautifully with the amp. We have been absolutely stunned by the sound difference between prologic and dolby digital. I have no hesitation in recommending either of them to you.

The speakers' sound volumes can be altered. I have not noticed a low speech volume. Play around with the volumes it may help.

Go for the silver! It'll match the amp!
