Did anybody else find Arlene's comment about John Barnes' weight a bit strange. If she had made the same comment about one of the women there would have been an outrage.

John knows he needs to loose weight and has commented on this himself. As a professional footballer he will have become accustomed to the weight issue: as all footballers put on weight during the summer break and they train for 4 to 6 wks prior to the new season to work off their "summer" fat. Managers and coaches are always on the case of the over weight player. He wont take offence and Arlene knew that. I agree that she would have been in hot water if she`d made that comment about a female contestant.

Training 4-5hrs a week will see that weight drop right off. He'll never be Gethin-esque, but Darren Gough size should see him through fine.

I agree.. I think John almost see`s SCD as means to loose weight as well as learning to dance. He has actually already lost weight as this time last year he was a lot bigger.

As it is such a good excuse to lose weight how come the professionals don't fade away to nothing

Probably because they can eat like a horse in the full knowledge that they`ll burn it off during the next training session

4-5? I thought it was a lot more than that?

More like 4-5 hours a day! Some couples are already up to 90 something hours according to Claudia on ITT tonight.

But my point was, how can she be allowed to mention a man's weight but not a woman's??? Ain't that a bit unfair on we men?

Wait and see what she says to Letitia next week......

No, I think Arlene had a very good point about John's weight. I actually think he should have lost weight a long time ago. He's known a long time he was going to be on the show so why didn't he start to lose weight then? I think he's using his weight issue as an excuse to stay in ie: he keeps saying on TV that he wants to stay in the show so he can lose that weight! Hopefully the viewers won't fall for it.

As for a woman being fat - yes, I think Arlene would say exactly the same thing to a woman. We all know Arlene doesn't mince her words and says exactly what she feels. So yes, I do believe she would say the same thing to a woman. And lets face it, if someone overweight is going on the show then they have to expect to face criticism from the judges for being overweight. And anyway, why the fuss - it didn't bother John Barnes. Arlene, as always, was just telling the truth, and what the British public at home were just thinking also.

Hi Tiger - I must have missed that - I thought she just said to get fitter? Did she actually say anything about his extra weight directly?

OH come on JB said at the press conference he WANTED to lose weight during SCD. If anything CRH comment abouty liking men with a bit of meat on the bone was a slightly less than totally encouraging. And heck as every Liverpool fan would tell you the last thing JB needs is an excuse to bottle out on a bit of hard work.

I would hope the likes of Arlene's comments would give him the impetus to try even harder.... IF that costume wasn't enough all ready.

I think he'll lose some weight during the series, but either way I've seen some really good movers who carry a bit of weight (John Belushi springs to mind). At least John Barnes seems to have a sense of timing - lots of the other men were a bit lacking in that department.

To be fair, she coupled her comments on his weight with comments about fitness, and he took that as fair.

It's not that he's naturally hefty, he knows he's let himself go and grown a gut, that he wants to get rid of. He looked as though he could be pretty nifty on his feet, so it'd stand him in good stead as the competition gets tougher.

Mind you next to the professionals every spare inch shows up - there's hardly anything of them and so it must be really tough for the celebs who haven't had their bodies under such scrutiny.

So do I. Arlene has never been one to hold back and if she thinks somebody has potential, but carrying excess weight is hindering their progress, then she will say so.

John would probably be the first to admit he needs to tone up and get fit.

Did anyone say it to Gloria Hunniford?

I (as a curvy lady) think she only said get fitter not get thinner - if she did then personally i think it's outrageous, can anyone actually quote what she actually said?

As a player, John Barnes used to be very lean until he suffered a badly ruptured achilles' tendon injury. That, added to the fact that he's always had a weakness for fast food, meant he suddenly struggled to stay fit (and he lost quite a bit of pace). But footballers are used to training in pre-season until they throw up, so he'll push himself now and will really start losing it quickly. I agree, though - he should have started long before the show began.

As someone who's had to work hard to lose weight I have every sympathy for the man...hearing my dear mother describe him in his outfit as the 'yellow tellytubby' did make me wince!

Quirky Shazzer,

Arlene advised John to get fitter, not lose weight, so it isn't outrageous after all is it?

Oh, and Gloria Hunniford is a lot older than John Barnes, and certainly isnt as tubby, so you can't compare the two.

I thought that is what she said! Which I think is fair comment.

Thanks for that - oh and btw - I can compare whatever I want!!!

In defence of John -- in one of the clips that was shown he did say he needed to lose weight. Arlene could have been a bit more tactful, but then, if she was, she wouldn't be Arlene.

I think it's more likely that a bloke's weight will be pointed out particularly if they are dressed in a costume that emphasises it. Poor John should have been given a shirt and jacket to do the cha cha in, something like Darren Bennett often tends to wear for non-ballroom dances. I am sure he will look a whole lot better in suit and tails for the ballroom dances.

Whereas the ladies are more likely to be able to get something flattering to wear no matter what dance they are doing and so any surplus flesh is less likely to become a topic of conversation.

Besides Mica last year, I don't think any of the girls this year would need to lose weight. Otherwise they will end up looking stick-thin like Camilla. Eww...

Would I be correct in thinking you are the person who was unhappy about comments made on a thread regarding Bruce Forsythe's age? Yet you feel it's ok to pass comments about people's size/shape/weight etc?
