Had an accident today :cry with my Samsung LCD.


Basically the screen took a whack this morning. To look at it it looks un-touched but as soon as you switch it on there appears to be a huge crack behind the screen. The sound is fine but there are no visuals except for a pretty multi-coloured mess.

Can this be fixed or will the insurance co pay up?

It can be fixed - but will cost more than the set cost originally (needs a new LCD panel) - contact your insurance company (assuming you are covered for accidental damage?).

I contacted the Insurance Co. yesterday and they're sending some independent bloke to take a look to see if it can be repaired.

Just out of interest, how much will LCD panel cost?

if it is like mine was,a 26" samsung lcd,it is around £400 for just the screen,and the price for the full tv i had is now only £400.
Makes no sense to replace,plus you may have to wait a long time if they have no replacement screens in stock,mine took 4 months to be replaced as they built it from scratch over in asia.

Surely, it would be better to replace than to repair if thats the case.

in my case they just gave me under £400 in vouchers for a new tv rather than replace the screen for a second time.
When they replaced the screen for the first time the tv was worth £600,lcds are falling so sharply in price it was no longer viable to get a replacement screen when it was the dearer option,vouchers saved them some money.

It varies from make to make and model to model, generally replacing the panel will exceed or equal the original price of the entire set. Or, for a Sharp LCD, cost between double and triple the original price of the set!.

Sorry, but we're not Samsung service agents, so I can't check the price - but it's not likely to be cost effective to change it.

Ok, so they came today and as expected the guy said "it's scrap".

Now, the insurance co. will be phoning me tomorrow and offering me a like for like.

I don't want any old piece of junk, so does anyone have any experience in these type of claims.

I would have prefered the cash so that I could go out and get what I wanted.

Also any advice on what to say if they try and pull a fast one?

If you bought it from a particular retailer because of the service or installation policys or aftercare you shaold be able to tell the insurance company that is where to go for the replacement set. They may liase with the shop direct or ask you to do the donkey work. If they feel that your sets new equilivent is a low end model make sure that all the features of your old set are found on the new one.

Basically, just spoke to the lady at SBS insurance and she said they will offer me a close match to what I've broken. So in other words they will give me a Samsung TV with the same spec or better. They can't offer me an inferior(sp) model so I'm happy with that

No, they usually try to send you a set in a box, they buy them at a special price, and they often don't include a guarantee either!.

thats right, so you'll have to check your insurance is now not void.

eg Domestic and general void all their warranties after an exchange of set, new for old like.

Yes it's on the household insurance, I don't think they've written the house off but I'd better check that out.

What happens if the set blows up after a few weeks/months? Surely I could get in touch and get em to sort it out?
