Hi Guys
My main TV is a Panasonic 26" CRT, I think I would like something with a larger screen but on looking at LCDs around 34" I am not very impressed with picture quality, even when looking at the more expensive models, of course when you start looking around they all look fantastic as every company seems to think that HD is the norm, and that is how to display them, when in fact for general TV its years away. When you get them to switch the HD over to general TV Progs, ITV, BBC, etc, I have yet to find a set that matches my 8 year old CRT set, in colour or sharpness. Is this just that they are not setup in the swowrooms or do they have someway to go in picture quality

LCD's and Plasma's show the defects in the transmissions far more, and also introduce upscaling artifacts as well, so they often tend to look worse than decent CRT sets. You also need to bear in mind the distance you're watching from, getting a larger screen means the defects are going to be larger anyway when viewed from the same distance.

In the showrooms they are almost certainly just displayed as they come out of the box, and they are set to be as garish as possible, so sensible adjustment helps a great deal.

But a good quality LCD/Plasma, sensibly set up, and viewed at a sensible distance, can be better than even good CRT sets. I would seriously suggest either FreeView or Sky though, analogue transmissions tend to look poorer - due to upscaling of the PAL defects.

In my experience with an LCD set, an HD source (HD-DVD and XBox 360) looks great (obviously). TV reception via a Freeview box also looks perfectly acceptable (most of the time). The 5 terrestrial channels however look awful (though I am in a poor tv reception area with bad ghosting).

just out of interest why have you gone for LCD - is it due to the size?
