Update the firmware as this fixed a TV out issue.

www.apple.com/uk will answer your cable question.

Component:

Composite:

are those the only 2 cables that will work as the older ipods you could buy a 99p cable of ebay and that would work

i forgot to say the settings arent a problem

I believe that the new iPods now push video out through the dock connector where as before it came from the headphone jack. Apple did this so they could push both composite and component video out but will mean you need new cables.

Whether someone on ebay is selling the right cables at a fraction of the price I do not know.

TV Out on the iPod Classic requires an Apple Universal Dock in conjunction with either the composite or component leads mentioned above. I understand an SVHS to SVHS lead will also work in conjuction with the Apple Universal Dock.

I have a dock from a 4G iPod photo, which predates the Apple Universal Dock. Apparently it lacks an Apple authentication chip (as do many third party docks), and so cannot be used for video output on a Classic, regardless of the lead used. So if I want video out, I have to buy a brand new Apple Universal Dock!

Neither does this lead work with the Classic - video can no longer be output via the headphone jack.

It is rumoured this change has been forced on Apple, as the Classic can support output at 480p which could be used for producing good quality copies.

As mentioned, you'll also need the 1.0.2 firmware which lets you select video out as on/off/ask.

The authentication chip is nonsense. You need new leads as the iPod classic outputs video from the dock connector, not the headphone jack but you don't need a dock.

So why does an SVHS lead with my existing 4G dock not work? It works on my iPod Photo, but not with the Classic.

I can only think there is a chip or some other device present in the new leads and Universal Dock that I am currently lacking.

There is states this cable will work direct from the iPod or thew Universal dock. You don't need to dock to output video.

Apple changed the way the new iPods output and handle video signals so I can only assume it was that.

Okay I guess you all know by now, it is indeed a chip, and it is not about copy protection, according to Apple it is to support new video functionality (or some similar guff). It is all about controlling the accessory market. As far as I can discover there is now only one 3rd party dock that supports video on 6th gen iPods, and that is the B&W Zeppelin, £299, and stil has limited video functionality (no menus or cover art).

I thought Apple just took the video pin out of the headphone jack, so they could sell their own wires?

The headphone jack no longer had video, but the 6th Gen iPods require an Apple authentication chip in any attached accessory to permit video out.
