I can't believe how cheap the Full HD plasmas have become.

The Panasonic TH-50PZ70 50 in Full HD prices in far cheaper than the Pioneer equivelant. Plus you get a free 5 Year guarantee.

Check out the price below:

yeh wait another year and they will be down again.

My next telly will be the Pioneer 1080p 50" or 60" with an AMAZING 20,000:1 contrast!

You might check the terms of the five year insurance? (it's NOT a guarantee) - I heard the other day that if the set is beyond economical repair, and they replace it for you - then the policy is cancelled there and then!. Just like if your car is written off, the insurance policy is cancelled.

I don't consider that very good for something supposedly a five year guarantee?.

As most of these extended 'guarantees' it's actually run by D&G insurance.

These would be the same 3/5 year warranties that Sony sell or give away free via d&g.
The fact that Sony, Panasonic and D&G are confident enough to place these 5 year guarantees on the sets speak for it's self.
The manufacturers will have brokered a deal with D&G for cheep prices on the cover as they are reasonably sure that the repair rate will very very low.
I can't believe that you are complaining that if the set is beyond economical repair you will get the new equivilent foc.
I also would not be too confident on the Sony free 5 year covers either. One of our dealer friends has 2 Sony LCD's sets just over 3 years old with Panel failure that D&G are refusing to cover as they did not supply 5 year cover on the screens back then despite the fact Sony said they would.

It's the same 5 year guarantee that is currently under discussion between D&G and Sony

Which is why I'm currently aware of the terms.

I would suggest D&G are confident, it's their risk.

I would suggest it's the other way round, D&G have approached first Panasonic and then Sony, offering them 5 year extended warranties at a VERY good price.

I'm not 'complaining', merely making people aware that the 5 year 'guarantee' may not last 5 years!.

It's the dealer who's in the sh*t, he sold it with a 5 year guarantee, and is responsible for it

However, as the 'guarantee' was supplied through Sony, the dealer can obviously bring pressure to bear on them, who in turn will bring pressure to bear on D&G. In the worst case scenario, the Sony rep will probably arrange compensation for the dealer!.

And I suppose that this is always mentioned when selling them Sony TV's, or is just a chance to knock Panasonic!!
The dealer in question did not sell the 5 year cover it came with the sets and he is alarmed at what D&G have told him.
I would accept that D&G could have approache d Panasonic/Sony with good prices for the extended guarantees but they would be based on sound business sense and the knowledge that both Sony and Panasonic are really reliable and generally have really good back-up service. I fail to believe that any of the parties would give away the 5 year if they really thoght they would loose money.
