I am going to try the usb humax mod
downsouth

On the good old digihome. It means putting a usb to ide cable in line between the motherboard and the hd, so wish me luck. I have ordered the usb to ide adaptor of fleabay as per the instructions, and will report my results as and when I do it.

Wish me luck. According to the humax instructions, wih the box in standby, the usb from the pc will wake the drive, and then you can extract the data as previously described on here.

I have got the usb widget, just waiting for the cable now. Can confirm that I can extract the programs as per previous tutorial, but its a bit slow. I will put a how to on here when its done. Good fun anyway.

Thanks everybody, and thanks to our friends over at the hummy forum for all the advice.

I've subscribed just to see what it is all about. I already have a cable.

Couldn't see a way of subscribing otherwise.

Click on "Thread tools" just above the words "line between" in downsouth's first post.

Great, thanks for that. I'll try and remember for the next time. Looking forward to what is hoping to happen.

well everyone, here are the results.

I have fitted the humax cable kindly provided by bob rugby over on the humax forum. I had to move the black ide adaptor he had fitted, as the hummy has a different layout to our digihomes, and couldn't connect to the drive and the motherboard.

What you want to know is does it work?

Yes it does, but the problem is you have to connect the usb to ide widgets power supply to the hard drive, so in other words, you have to whip the top off every time to power it up.

For some reason, the ide power from the digihome, isn't sufficient for the pc to see the usb drive.

I have taken a picture, but do not know how to upload it to the site.

I recommend that if you want to extract the programs from the hard drive, get the usb to ide widget from fleabay, leave your lid loose on the digihome, and just connect it to the ide and power when you want to extract a program, Not ideal, but a solution.

Thanks for all the interest, sorry it didn't work as well as I hoped.

I must admit that I haven't taken the cover off my Evesham DTR250 yet, but you have realised that the right hand side of the front panel opens to reveal the space where a card reader and what looks like a USB plug would go.

As I said I haven't had the cover off to see how much clearance there is behind but the cover presses in to release it...

All the Digihome clones are designed like that. Looks like they chickened out of some features at the last minute, or they bought up a million boxes on the cheap

Sure, I know one person who wasn't aware it was ther so just wanted to be sure to mention it.

I had a quick look at the Humax info... Am I correct in assuming that this mod basically puts two IDE controllers onto the cable (one the PVR and the other the USB2IDE device) and relies on one of them being switched off(and ignoring data bus loading etc)? Seems risky to me, what precautions do you take (put the box in standby and make sure there are no scheduled recordings?)

For the Pace a chap called Bullfrog (over in the Pace forum here) sourced a USB board that fits in-line with the host/drive cable and switches between the two, of course for the Pace there was a need for 40<->44 pin cable converters for the 2 1/2 inch drive

Wouldn't it be easier/quicker just to get a Freeview adaptor for your PC?

One option would be to use a 2 1/2" laptop drive instead. Most of the USB convertors I've seen take the power from the USB bus for these drives. However, it would need yet another convertor to attach it to the standard IDE cable.

Hi Downsouth - just thought I'd mention that my Hummy is not recognised as a regular desktop USB drive like you'd expect from say, a mouse or external hard drive. But run the download software and it's there alright.

P.S. sorry the cable, so far, not 100% but on the bright side all you need now to complete the mod is a HUMMY!!

Cheers
