Hello - Can I pick the collective brains of this forum please? I have a Sony 40" Bravia and a Sony STR DG910 AV receiver. I use the optical input on the amp to take the sound from my Sky box and this has worked well for a number of months with my Sky + Box. I have just upgraded to a Sky HD box - very pleased with the picture quality but I am experiencing a very distinct cracking noise from the speakers when I select the Sky guide or a specific channel. It happens about 50% of the time -sometimes louder, sometimes softer on the right or left front speakers. Only happens thro the AV receiver - its OK on the TV speakers. Sky have changed the box - same issue and the engineer could only suggest using the HDMI to carry the audio which solved the problem but means I have no 5.1 sound. Audio settings on the Sky box are set to Dolby Digital. Could it be the optical cable - it is not new and was not an expensive one but my understanding was they either work or don't. Other than that I am a bit stuck as to what to try next. Thanks in advance.

No - a sharp crack.
Most likely a problem with the Sky box. Sounds like it is not muting the optical out when switching channels etc. The crack you are hearing is random digital noise being generated as it switches from one to another.
Very unlikely the cable is to blame. A faulty cable would make itself very noticeable. You would get very nasty noises whatever you were listening to if it was causing data to get lost or corrupted. Believe me a poor digital connection is not shy when it comes to making itself apparent
Trouble is if it IS the box there is not a lot you can do about it. Apart from pressing the mute button on the AV receiver when you change channels. Or hope Sky come up with a fix.

Thanks - are you suggesting its likely to be a problem with all the HD boxes or specifically mine (and the other one they tried) although if all boxes then why would nobody else be having the problem?

I think it's a problem with ALL Thomson HD boxes, but it also depends on the particular amplifier it's connected to.
