Problem with optical splitter on new Yamaha RV-V361

I've been using an optical splitter to input my original XBOX and XBOX360 into one optical input on my Yamaha RX-V359. It was great.

However, the RX-V359 developed a fault and had to be replaced for the newer RX-V361.

Great I thought.

However, the splitter doesn't work now, I get no sound from either XBOX when I pass through the splitter. They work fine when connected directly.

Why would it work with the old Yamaha and not the new?

Have you assigned this connection properly during setup?

Sorry. I have no idea.

I simply plugged into the optical input labelled 'CD' and switched to CD.

As I say, there is no change in original setup apart from the new Yamaha and the devices do work without the splitter.

Just looked at the online manual, you need to read page 48 to correctly assign this input.

Hi mate,

Yeah. Had a look at that but it doesn't change anything. The input just assigns the connection a name and determines what you need to select to receive the signal from that hole.

My problem is that I have 2 optical leads (from XBOX and XBOX360) going into 1 optical connection via a splitter. It worked on my old Yamaha but not the new one. Regardless of what the connection name is assigned to.

The splitter just doesn't seem to work on the new Yamaha for some reason.

I can't see why this splitter shouldn't work via this receiver.

Pretty sure this is a setup issue.

Looking at the user manual it looks like the default is > Optical Input 3 is assigned to CD. Check you have the cable in this connection. If not, either swap the cable over or re-assign Input 2 to CD as the default is DTV/CBL.

Failing this, try connecting just one X box up to the receiver, once you get audio try it with the splitter.

Or the splitter has been damaged in some way! The 361 should be fine. Ther are two optical inputs on the 361 have you tried both?

Yes, as I said in my first post - without the splitter, devices work fine.

So it is definately the splitter causing this.

However, I know it is not faulty as I have a Yamaha rxv-357 in the other room and it works on that - and I have a spare splitter and it does the same.

So, I have changed splitters, cables but stillt he same.

The reason I use the splitter is that I have my SkyHD is one optical and I have the two XBOX's in the other.

It's a little weird considering the exact same setup worked on the 359.

The only thing I can think of is that the fibre cable reach on the splitter is not quite right for your 361 which I have heard of on other equip. As everything works independantly I cannot suggest anything else

Have you tried the splitter with Sky HD and one X Box?

Is the splitter similar to this...

Or this.....

It's like the 2nd one.

With arrows on it pointing all ways.

I just don't understand why it works on the 357 and 359 and not the 361.

I tried with Sky and an XBOX and the splitter still didn't work.

It's weird.

By rights this is for one input > two outputs, but I have heard it working the other way around, as I understand it, only one device can be switched on at any one time. Seeing you have had this working in this configuration before, I believe you are doing everything correctly.

Yes it is very weird, can only recommend purchasing the 3way splitter I linked to earlier, I can't think of anything else to try.

Exactly. The arrows on the splitter point all ways indicating that any hole can input or output. But I always had the output onein the side with just one connection (I have tried it the other way now). Yes, if 2 devices were on, one would overide the other. But one would always work.

It's baffled me.
