N95 Let downs/missing apps
Got an N95 last week, and allthough its an amazing phone, there are just a couple of things bugging me.
Firstly, you cannot have a full screen wallpaper (I assume its possible, by creating your own theme on a PC but its a bit long winded) No countdown timer (I used to use it a lot for cooking on my old phone) No video screensavers (My mums old 6280 used to be able to do this, but a later model cannot??) And also no video ringtones. And finally, the orange light stays on when you are filming video which is annoying if you are filming close up or at night. The rest of the problems I encountered im sure can be fixed by upgrading the firmware (GPS is crap/keep getting Memory Full error/battery life poor) Other than that, its a great phone, but ive had SE handsets for the past 2 years so I guess its gonna take some getting used to. |

You have to remember this is a smartphone, its completely customisable. All the things you want (and more) are provided by third party software. You can change the menus, have it read text messages to you etc etc And the best thing is some of this is free. Nokia have a beta lab, where you can test new software, like the new conversation software (select someone in your phonebook and see the texts from them and your reply as a converstion). Or Nokia Widsets which is free, or Yahoo Go! Which is free.

I know its a smartphone, but I cannot understand why video ringtones arent supported when they are on much older nokia phones. Is there a third party app that can do it?
Also, ive noticed, on my old SE phone, you could press one of the volume keys and a status screen would display showing stuff like free memory, used memory and percentage of battery left. I cannot do this on my new phone also you cannot switch the camera noise off, and silent doesnt silence when viewing video. Like I say its a decent phone, but I guess Im too used to SE phones. |

Buying a smartphone is like buying a PC, there will be some programs bundled with it. But you can add whatever you want. A featurephone tries to copy some of the best programs from a smartphone but you are stuck with them. |

I have the exact same grudges against my N73.
No video ringtone, no screensavers (cant have a picture of my kid pop up after like 20 seconds), you cant turn java games' volume down like with standard phones by just using the volume keys, cant have full screen wallpaper.... they are crap! Plus one of the worst things is you cant specify what you want to appear in the gallery.. so when i put the TomTom software on the phone, i went to the gallery, and it had about 50 pictures of different road signs that was part of TomTom. I've looked EVERYWHERE for programs to sort out these issues and have been unsuccessful. Either it says the needed program doesnt exist yet for the S60E3 or the ones that do exist dont do the job properly ie. ThemeDIY - yes it can create full screen wallpapers, buts its a full theme - but doesnt allow you to use a gif file or normal pictures as screensavers - which you could probably do on an old SonyEricsson T68i. Slide Screensaver - You can use many images to appear as a slideshow - but whats the point, as the screensaver only kicks in when the phone is in power save mode, which means the screen is black, and you cant even see these pictures. I will never be buying a Nokia smartphone again, unfortunately i am stuck with this one as im on contract for another 16 months unless i sell or swap it. In my opinion, my partners pink 7373 is much better than this crap i have, and would prefer to have my own pink phone than have this one for another year. |

Yes its a smartphone, but the phone/camera side should be a bit more user friendly. Dont get me wrong, its a fantastic handset, I really love the web and RSS facilities, I have never seen as good on any other phone before, but just because its a smartphone, doesnt mean I shouldnt have to settle. |

Whilst not trying to defend the lack of these features. I've never understood the need for animated screensavers (wastes battery, and if the screen saver is on then I'm not using the phone, so why would I want to see it displaying stuff). Video ringtones (I look at the screen and see who is calling ... if I answer then the video stops, if I don't answer then I'm hardly likely to continue watching it.)
Anyway glad to hear your 6300 is so highly regarding. Damn good price for a fine phone. |

I agree about the price, especially seeing as 'apparently', according to a mobile phone review site, the Nokia 6300 is the only Nokia to ever get 5 out of 5 (by them i assume).
First thing i noticed was it was much quicker than my N73 - hell of a bonus. Second - i could actually text!! Bigger buttons.. wohoo!! Thirdly - much more features, made the N73 seem old (apart from not having the option to install programs Oh.. and lastly.. how nice n snug it fits in my pocket without knowing its there.. i kept having to put my hand in my pocket to make sure it WAS there lol Highly recommend this great phone.. oh and especially from argos as you get a £5 gift voucher too!! |

My mum taped my little sister pulling lots of mad faces on hers. Slide the phone shut and the crazy video (muted) would show with a white surround and play for about 5-10 seconds (until the light fades out) Hard to explain but looked great Quote:

I like being able to use music videos as ringtones (better than just the mp3) also, when ive seen concerts or performances on TV, I'd video the screen and then would be able to use them.
