i've never had a problem putting tunes on my ipod, but my OH bought one yesterday 'for his music'
and we're having real trouble....when its connected to pc [via usb] it says there are five hundred-odd tunes, but when it's disconnected, ipod reads NO MUSIC yet looking in the settings, it shows that the space has been used
i use realplayer to put tunes on my ipod [nano 4GB]
he bought the new 8GB

can anyone tell us [in simple terms] what we're doing wrong

thank you very much, jo

Try resetting it or restoring it.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983

Or reset:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Centre (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.

i didn't even know you could use anything other than itunes. i think you may be on your own troubleshooting your unusual method though.

Apple broke 3rd party compatibility with the new Ipod models.
